Problem: you need a second computer with the same or an higher operating system version.

As I didn’t have a second machine with Monterey already running, I went to the Apple Store and they revived the T2 chip. Problem solved and I hope this will also help others who faced bricked computers after the Monterey install.

If your Mac doesn't turn on

If your Mac doesn't seem to turn on after you press the power button, follow these steps.

Your Mac might be turned on but appear to be turned off, even though it's connected to AC power and a working display. Follow these steps.

  1. Press and hold the power button on your Mac for at least 10 seconds, then release. If your Mac is turned on, this forces it to turn off.
  2. If you see no change on your Mac, press and release the power button normally.
  3. If your Mac now turns on but doesn't finish starting up, follow the steps for when your Mac doesn't start up all the way.
  4. If your Mac still doesn't turn on, please contact Apple Support.

I also updated my MacBook Pro to Monterey and it is just black when trying to boot up. I know that it’s on for 2 reasons. 1. It can get extremely hot and 2 the mousepad clicks. I took it to Apple Genius Bar and they state it is due to my logic board. I’ve never had any issues until I updated and they say that I will owe $500 to fix it. They say that there’s no way the update caused a hardware issue but I had no problems before I updated. They said there’s nothing that they can do except that I pay the $500.

Insist, but with respect. Ask to be escalated to a senior support adviser, talk to them about the hundreds of cases on Apple forums and also on the news.

Yes, even tech news websites already reported on this.

If you just tried to go to an Apple Store, they won’t be able to help and authorize the service. You need to call and try to speak to a Senior Support Adviser

Wanted to give everyone an inspiring update. As some may remember, my 2019 MacBook Pro died mid Monterey update. Apple store wanted $572 to fix, and I balked. I got a call from Apple Support yesterday, telling me they looked more closely at the issue and would be willing to exchange my busted laptop for a comparable model.

The key here seemed to be the fact that I bought my device from Apple in early 2020. I was able to exchange my device for a new one, restoring my faith in Apple. There is no exchange program I'm aware of. I seemed to be lucky enough to have someone followup on my case, even after I refused the charge to fix.

So I strongly urge everyone suffering the same problem with fairly newish MacBooks to continue reaching out and working with Apple support. Use this as an example even.

Just so everybody knows, Apple did an “exception” and agreed to fix my 2016 Mac. The service is ready and I’m picking it up tomorrow.

But I had to phone them some times to get it. All times I brought up the Apple forums and the tech websites reporting on the issue.

But always polite.

A bricked pc because of an OS update is something it shouldn’t happen. Apple maybe should consider stop pushing firmware updates together with OS updates. I’m not an engineer, but this seems to have been the reason.

I don't think it'll help. The revive and restore will only work on the following Intel-based Mac computers with an Apple T2 Security Chip:

  • iMac (2020)
  • Mac Pro (2019)
  • Mac mini (2018)
  • iMac Pro (2017)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)
  • MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2020)
  • MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2019)

My year-and-a-half 16" MacBook Pro also bricked a few days after the Monterey install. Tried the various things that Apple support on the phone suggested, but no sign of power when I hit the power button - nada. No flicker, nothing ever on the screen, no sound, nothing. Brought it into the Genius Bar. They said the problem was that the inside of the machine was filthy (sand and liquid, which doesn't make much sense). So, they are now doing an expensive rebuild, totally destroying the hard drive, and I'll get a rebuilt machine with a 90-day warrantee. Unfortunately, I didn't have AppleCare this time.

interesting to see this is a common problem - they didn't alert me to this.
