I have this exact problem, with a couple additional details:

1. I did the update the other day, Mail was fine until I woke my computer this morning.
2. If you have older messages in your Inbox, go back and what your messages prior to 9/30 are doing. Going back through older email, anything prior to 9/30 (plus one message from early morning on 9/30) loads normally.
3. Everything is normal on my iPhone and through icloud.com.

The information in Alan's link solved the problem for me. I was running Avast! antivirus and as soon as I uninstalled it and rebooted, my email returned to normal. Seems like an update form them didn't respond well to Monterey.

Same issue after upgrading to newest MacOS version. In Avast Security going into the menu - preferences - important shields -> Email Shield.. disabling the function "Scan secure connections" did the trick and all email contents loading fine again.

I have the same problem with email content not loading after upgrading to Monterey. And I am not running any anti-virus software.
