Cannot upgrade to Monterey with non-apple SSD.

I cannot upgrade from Big Sur (11.6.1) to Monterey. I was unable to do so with the beta and now that the production release is available I'm still having the same issue. When attempting to run the installer from the applications folder, it fails to restart and prompts me to launch the application again. So I created a bootable USB using createinstallmedia and that progresses further, but during the restart process, it eventually fails with a "firmware upgrade could not be installed. Compatible internal media ..." error message. It then launches the startup disk dialog and I reboot back into Big Sur.

I ran into the same issue and contacted OWC to see if they had a firmware update available for my SSD. Talking to support, they said that it isn't the SSD that requires the firmware update, but the MacBook Pro itself, which requires an EFI update that won't be installed unless there's an Apple SSD installed. They recommended that I reinstall the original Apple SSD, then install Monterey to get the EFI update, then replace the Apple SSD with the OWC SSD, and upgrade from Big Sur 11.6.1 to Monterey. According to OWC, they've tested this fix in their lab and it works. (We'll see.)

Does the iMac also need an EFI update?

My system worked smooth under Big Sur, and the external SSD has proven a smoother and faster experience than the internal Fusion Drive (until Monterey came along and booting now takes about 30 minutes on average).

yes It should but i believe you would have to install the prior OS on it first then do the upgrade on it from there , once done you should be able to update your other SSD with out issues. i still say this is a big mess up on apple and maybe someone should be calling and talking to them, otherwise this is going to turn into a big Issue for lots of customers. As why would you need a original apple ssd to update a firmware on the mainboard it's not the firmware on the ssd thats being updated, its the firmware on the board. and why it needs the original SSD installed to do this is messed up. As all the computers i have built over the years and thats allot none ever needed a original ssd installed to do any sort of update. This is bizarre behavior.

MacTracker did not show me much sadly.

But I found two part numbers, MZ-JPV256O/0A4 and MZ-JPU256T/0A1.

I hope these work. Just had a call with Apple Support and they were not aware of the problem.

For now I was advised to try ALT+CMD+R option, but I do not have high hopes for that.

I found out that my EFI version is way old anywayz, 132.0.0.0.0. So the BigSur successful installation did not update the EFI firmware version. So Monterey installer could be fixed to not care about the failing update but for now it does care about updating.........

The explanation of having a non-Apple SSD is the reason for the problem might not be 100% accurate.

Mine is a MacBook 12-inch early 2015. It has the exact same issue for installing the Monterey either from inside and with a USB.

But my System Information shows the internal storage is an: APPLE SSD AP0512H.

Therefore, try a genuine APPLE SSD might not be the correct solution. It might require newer APPLE SSD than certain models

Did you try changing the startup disk?

With my MacPro I replaced the genuine Apple SSD with the Samsung EVO (with BigSur still installed) and system would not start from it. But in recovery menu I could choose to select startup disk and there it did see the Evo.

Btw. at first I seemed to have not properly secured the SSD in its socket, so startup only provided a big question mark...
