Screen saver broken in Monterey
When selecting the Photos library or a folder of photos, they do not render. Have tried various options (e.g., Classic, Ken Burns, etc.). No luck.

I wanted to edit this to add to it, but can't do that, so here we go. I did notice on the iMac that if I pick any other screen saver, Monterey, Hello etc. they work, it is just with photos that they do not work.
This will probably be fixed in the same decade that Apple will sort out the months' long issue of music no longer streaming properly from Mac to Airport Express (quits after 7 seconds). The arrogance of this company - ignoring what should be quick fixes that are annoying to many loyal customers - is outrageous.
There's reason to believe this will be fixed in the next Monterey release. Mentioning where that hope comes from will get your post removed, apparently, so I will leave it at that.
If you're thinking about downgrading/resetting back to factory defaults, consider waiting a bit.
Going to add some observations and confirm Classic and Ken Burns screen saver issues with Monterey, with zilch rendering as most everyone on this thread. It consistently does not render on the Main Display.
First the host is Mac mini (2018) running the 3 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5. I also use eGPU (AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT 8 GB) to drive multimonitor setup given the long-outstanding issue wherein mini lacks stability in a triple monitor arrangement (when one monitor must use the HDMI port).
The 'Monterey' and highly touted 'hello' screen saver work fine, providing some degree of confidence that the neither Intel nor eGPU lack core OS drivers. Notwithstanding, the latter "script" lacks the traditional Apple finess: it does not complete all 'scripting' on the different display geometries prior to refresh. My opinion, ymmv
Now here is a "kicker": prior to choosing either of Classic or Ken Burns screen savers, setup wifi and connect iPad/iPhone as your sidekick. While all main screens remain blank, the screen saver will render on the sidekick display while in the 'separate display' mode as an extended display. The other screen saver types like floating, flip-up, sliding panels, shifting tiles, photo mobile perform similarly.
Since i have two "extended displays" in addition to the sidekick, I want to note that "Origami" and "Vintage Prints" would initialize the rendering on one or both extended displays, while only actively working on the sidekick. As one of our fellow sufferers noted, a low brightness rendition on a non-sidekick extended display did occur during my testing. This ultimately points to a failure in gamut processing routines, so a failed regression testing of the Quartz context (or whatever its called these days in the march to convergence with mobile by Cupertino) rewrites.
I check verified the display ColorSync ICC profiles on Monterey, and no repairs were indicated.
thank goodness im not the only one... i thought i broke something or screwed up the files. only monterey, flurry, and drift work for me. i prefer key burns and that one doesn't work, it just cycles through solid colors... im on a macbook air m1 on 12.0.1
I have the exact issue as described. Photo based screensavers that previously worked are no longer working on Monterey. I have never reported a problem before, how is that done, is it only via telephone or is there a link for opening an issue?
Same here. MacBook Air (M1) screensaver works although it is no longer showing my edited photos. They are all the unedited versions which is annoying as I have edited thousands of photos. On my iMac no luck at all. Just a black screen.
I also find that if I go into Photos and right click on an album and choose "play slideshow" it will not play. I think the issue is slideshow with Photos. The Apple screensavers all work. Photos do not.
I'm running Monterey 12.0.1 on a new 24" iMac. No problem right clicking on an album and playing a slideshow. Also no problem using albums as Screensavers. On my Wife's 2017 Intel iMac running the same version of Monterey , a no go using Photo albums for screensavers.
The trick is to get the ilifemediabrowser file folder in your library/application support directory and all will work. I have this file from long ago when I had the iLife suite (since deleted). For some reason when the iLife suite was deleted or updated for the newer OS it left this file in my directory. If I remove that file then photos screen save no longer works. Not sure how others can get this file installed.
Look in the Macintosh/library/application support folder. If it worked you should see a folder called ilifemediabrowser and iLifeslideshow folder. You only need the first folder to make the screensaver to work. If neither one is there then the install did not take. Not sure where to go to get the file unless you know someone with an older OS that you could copy the folder from.
Yes, unfortunately I looked and I can see the folder ilifemediabrowser with a sub folder named Plug-Ins, but the screensavers with photos still are not working. The preview is just a blank screen and the screensaver does the same.
But thanks for the info, I hope Apple will fix this.
I got a message that Apple cannot verify that the file isn't spam even though it appeared to be on their website! I can't seem to get past the error message. When I click "Ok" it quits and just doesn't seem to let me download it. I don't see anything iLife in my Library. Apple Support had me delete the iLife folders when I contacted them for help with this problem. Ugh!
I guess we must be missing something or I'm just lucky. Like I stated without that file my photos screensaver does not work but it does with that file so not sure what is happening. I'm sure Apple will fix in some update later.
Wierd thing with the screen saver - for me ,the screen saver will work when the "1" , "2" or "5" minute option is selected. Once a larger time frame is chosen the dreaded "yellow triangle" shows up. It works for all the standard savers. The photo and snapshot are still blank.
I'm having the exact same problems. When I select the folder of photos, it appears to select them, but when I go to preview, I get faint ghost pictures. It's frustrating. It does the same with whatever folder of photos I choose.
