iPhone 6s with iOS 15 Safari disconnects when it lost focus

After the upgrade to iOS 15 (and all updates up to 15.1), Safari on my my iPhone 6s does drop the active connection to a web application when I change to another App.

Until the upgrade to iOS 15 Safari kept the connection alive even when Safari did not have focus.

What is changed and can this be fixed with a setting?

Same thing happening on my iPhone 10s with iOS 15.1--seems to be a webkit bug. If Safari or Mail loses focus or the phone goes to sleep, I return to find these error messages:

The Safari error is annoying but easily resolved--hit refresh and the page reloads, albeit losing your place on the page. The email version seems to only affect emails with images or dynamically served elements--leading me to believe webkit or some other browsing component is the issue. It's also harder to resolve, requiring that I mark the message as unread, force quit the Mail app, then re-open the app to force it load the mail message again.

As with the original poster, this started with one of the releases of iOS 15, but has become very consistent under 15.1.

Hello wouter-58.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities and for sharing these details with us. You had mentioned when using Safari, you will lose connection when switching to a different app. To confirm, are you getting prompted an error message that you have no connection to the internet?

According to the following resource below:

Switch apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

It states the following: "After you switch to a different app, some apps run for a short period of time before they're set to a suspended state." This means that the app might most likely be suspended until it's in use.

If you're nothing an error message or your issue is something completely different, please share some additional details with us. We'll do our best to assist you or point you in the right direction for help!

We hope this information is useful. Cheers.

Thanks for your reply.

Switching Apps is a known procedure for me, and for very sure after the upgrade to iOS 15 Safari behaves different in keeping the connection alive.

Long ago (I cannot recall when) with an iOS upgrade, probably to iOS 12, I could Switch away from Safari to e.g. read an incoming e-mail or WhatsApp message and return to Safari without it being disconnected from web application. The time I could Switch away from Safari was at least a minute. Now Safari disconnects right away (within the time I can Switch away and back right after another).

Safari only lost connection when the iPhone went in Auto lock after the set time (5 minutes for my iPhone).

Now with iOS 15 I don't get an iPhone error message, the error message (as being disconnected) is within the web application that I run in Safari.

I checked the Background App Refresh setting, it was off. I did set it to On for both Wifi and Cellular, but there is no separate Safari entry to enable Background App Refresh.

Background App Refresh set to On did not make a difference.
