After iOS 15.1 Upgrade, No Notification Sounds

Yesterday I updated my iPhone 8 to iOS 15.1 and now I get no notification sounds on my phone or Apple Watch after I receive a notification. I checked the "silent" switch on my iPhone, and it's not turned on. My Notification settings are the same as they were before I updated when I heard notification sound.

I check the Notifications settings for Messages, and they are turned on with a sound assigned to the notifications. But whenever I get a message, I don't hear a sound even though I see the notification banner on my iPhone home screen.

So how do I get the notification sounds to work?

For all those that since IOS15.1 update with no Email sound notification try this as it worked for me, Settings>Mail>Notifications then scroll to the bottom>Customise Notifications>Alerts to ON.

Hi Tom H.,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with receiving notifications after updating your iPhone 8. We'd like to help.

Have you restarted both your iPhone and Apple Watch since this issue started? If not, go ahead and try that now. It can resolve issues like this on occasion.

Then, from what you've described, it's possible that you have a Focus scheduled that may include Do Not Disturb as part of the plan. Check out this resource to see if that helps:

Use Do Not Disturb on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Let us know how that goes.

Take care!

To update my earlier message. After an online with Apple, I was advised to reset my phone. I did and there was absolutely no change, just a lot of frustration!

However, I noticed that there was no difference on my side mute on/off button and that when I used the volume control button that it was always showing as mute. Usually for me the phone would vibrate when I put the phone into mute mode - but nothing was happening. So, I the mute has somehow been locked on. To rectify the problem, I've enabled AssistiveTouch through Settings>Accessibility>Touch>Assistive Touch. I could then unmute the phone and get the notification sounds back again. Hallelujah!

It isn't optimal - but it has worked for me!

Hi and everyone I know who got that update last night I have the same problem. I have disabled focus, I have checked all of my sounds and notifications, yet I still cannot get a ring when someone calls me, I do not get a notification when someone messages me and when I message them they say that I have turned off notifications. I cannot get my salons back! Please Apple, if you want to fix viruses and bugs, that’s fine but leave everything else alone! I have grown to despise Apple and I’m seriously considering dumping all of our Apple products and having my sister‘s tech friend switch us over so other devices! We spent half our lives trying to figure out how the **** to get our Apple devices working. It’s not funny anymore

Ever since upgrading to iOS 15, my iPhone 11 Pro (which is a brand new device l or so Apple says) and iPad Pro have been screwed up. I’ve tried the solutions in here, and I appreciate them! But my next call is to support, I wanted to look around here first. Because you know that’s the first question they ask, lol!

I had the same problem. There was one of my contacts that I recently texted that after the new update I wouldn’t receive notifications and the ring wouldn’t chime as well. I went through all my settings and everything was on. Turns out my hide alerts were on for only that one contact and once I changed it it was working again!

Same issue. I have tried all the standard instructions and found a temporary fix. I noticed that I could receive notifications on either the Apple Watch or my IPhone. When I would turn off notifications to my Watch, just like magic they would appear on my phone.

i hope this will help some of you.

I hope Apple fixes this in the upcoming update.

It didn’t help! Regarding to the settings, I haven’t changed any setting for months and after upgrading to IOS15.1 I noticed that if my phone is locked, I don’t receive any notification about messages, calendar reminders etc. To fix this issue I turned on scheduled summary for notifications and set showing them immediately for specific app - finally I can see notifications on my locked screen but the are still silent however the volume is on. Honestly, it’s a real mess from apple development side, because I don’t want to change anything on my phone after system upgrade. It’s really a big problem, I miss a lot of urgent notifications and reminders. If you don’t fix this problem ASAP it forces me to buy an NOT apple product.

Resetting will only be a temporary fix, the problem will likely return. Believe me, I've tried EVERYTHING and then some, the problem is with Apple's notification system.

I thought this bug would have been fixed with the latest major iOS update, but it's still there. It seems that all these notifications problems keep appearing for others and Apple just doesn't bother fixing them. I can no longer rely on notifications to know if I've received a message or not, so, now I check my phone dozens of times throughout the day to see if I received any. Absolutely ridiculous that Apple hasn't fixed this yet, seems like a pretty major bug when notifications stop working.

I have an iPhone 6 iOS 15.2

I made changes yesterday that I should not have.

Please tell me how to set up my phone so that when I receive messages, and the phone is locked, and someone sends me a text message, I will hear a sound to single me. I have it set up for Bark sound. Something I did (wrong) has made it not work. I am 82 years old. Simple directions, please.
