iOS 15.1 broke connectivity to my car stereo

I own a 2014 Chevy Cruze. It has the factory default stereo in it.

The radio looks like this:

Prior to the iOS 15.1 update, when I plugged my iPhone Xr in to the car, the stereo would detect the iPhone, switch to it and I could play anything on the phone using a Lightning cable plugged into the car's USB port.

I took my wife's iPhone 12, which has iOS 14.8.1 on it, and it worked fine. I upgraded to 15.1 and again it stopped working.

I plug either phone in, they start to charge, but the stereo no longer detects the phone.

The obvious workaround is to just plug the aux cable into the headphone jack on the... Oh wait...

This is obviously a bug in iOS 15.1. I called Apple and reported it. I'm trying to send logs to Apple now.

The following are NOT correct answers:

  1. Get a new car
  2. Get a new car stereo

If you're going to say either of those in your comments, don't bother commenting.

If you've seen this in your car and have figured out how to fix it, please feel free to share.

If not, this is just a heads up that you may experience this issue if you have an older stereo in your car

I know I can use the Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter, and that is my current workaround. But I can't do that and charge the phone at the same time, which is going to be a problem for long trips with GPS.

Same problem with a Mercedes’ using (lightning to MB aux) cable. & iPhone 13 pro max

No audio after installing 15.1

Just called Apple support.

tech recommended I ‘reset all settings’

settings->general->transfer or reset iPhone-> reset->reset all settings.

worked like a charm.

I’m sorry but this is DEFINITELY an issue with the upgrade 15.1! You may not be affected but there are many people who are. My update was downloaded prior to leaving to go to work. Everything worked fine on journey to work. Installed itself whilst I was at work and system would not work on way home. My daughter hadn’t updated her phone which was picked up immediately on my car so definitely linked to that update as many others have said.

I have a Chevy Cruze 2014 LT and this new IOS update completely broke my iPhone to car connection on the basis of music. I am highly upset about this. Everything was working perfectly fine until these new updates. Apple has told me to update my radio/stereo system and I will NOT. Nothing was broke until Appel came with this new update. Apple better fix this. I’m not updating anything. Everything was perfectly intact. It cost extra, unnecessary money to update my vehicle. I am not doing it. Apple, do better.

So this is why I said “everyone I KNOW”, because I don’t know everyone in the world, but I know a lot of people this issue is effecting. I listed the manufacturers of the cars people have reported here, as well as others I personally know and have tried. I’m also encouraging others to report it directly to Apple, where many reps are bullying those who report by telling them to “upgrade their cars”.

I’m so glad you personally aren’t experiencing this issue, however everyone else here is. This is 10000% something Apple should’ve known about before this launch, and putting your response in bold doesn’t make it better than anyone else’s. Additionally, people talking about this issue are upset and they have every right to be, therefore some venting is inevitable. However, repeatedly replying that this issue hasn’t happened to you is not helpful in any way.

I have the 2012 Chevy Cruze and the SAME thing happened to me. My stereo would play my friends who still had ios 14 but mine (ios15) would NOT. It’s getting frustrating because I even bought a new cord and it simply did NOT work. Tried to contact apple but they were basically blaming my car, it’s clearly NOT my car it’s ios. I hope they fix this ASAP.

I have a 2012 Chevy Cruze but the stereo looks exactly the same. Same issue I’m having. My girlfriend has an iPhone 11 on ios 14 and her phone still connects to the car via lightning usb to play music. Mine does not work even after I downloaded iOS 15.1.1 and I don’t believe there is a workaround other than using the aux adapter or Bluetooth adapter. Apple needs to fix this!!!

so you know apple support will tell you to try changing cables or even stereos in your car before they even waste their time trying to fix the issue. If the shoe was on the other foot I’m sure you would be upset as well. How many people spend hours in their car a day or week and now cannot use the music they bought or pay for through apple in their car. We can be ****** off about this when apple gives us the run around. But maybe social media posts is the best way to get what we want. I wouldn’t advise someone to get an apple phone if they own a GM vehicle or any of the other cars listed.

I have the same issue. I have a 2012 Chevy Cruze. I did the iOS 15 update and now the car doesn’t recognize my phone for Apple Music, Podcasts and directions with Maps. Basically anything you would want.

I called Apple support to report it and they had me reset my iPhone settings to see if that would work. BIG MISTAKE, HUGE! Ultimately, they couldn’t figure out a solution and now I have to set my phone back up. The guy just told me to update my stereo or get a new car lol. What?!

I thought I was the only one! Hope they fix this soon!

I'm person number 1,977 on JUST THIS THREAD with the same problem that started today when I upgraded. There are dozens of threads here and on reddit and 9to5 and elsewhere about this problem that date to SEPTEMBER. Oh, and you can't downgrade back to a working OS.

I'm not sure how saying "someone somewhere is working on it, probably, but we don't know who or how much, and until some unknown future date your options are either get a new car, or a new stereo, or pound sand" is helpful. Actually I am certain it is not helpful.

You know what's a lot cheaper than a new car or a new stereo? An Android phone.
