Greyed out history button in safari

When I have history that I want to delete, I go into my history I on the top bar, I go to the bottom where I have been led to, and there is a history button but it is greyed out. I have gone through my screen time, and it is all off, but it still refuses to have a button to click. any way I can delete my history?

Also, there is a apple suggestions that comes up due to my history and I do not know how to get rid of it, any one have any advice?

Thanks :)

Thanks for reaching out, grace_25.

It sounds like you're looking to delete your browsing history. We can help.

A great resource is the steps in Clear your browsing history in Safari on Mac. Give that a try and see if there is any improvement. If there's no change after, we'd like to collect a few more details:

  1. Is Clear History grayed out when you click on Safari in the menu bar on your Mac instead of clicking on History first?
  2. Does it show you have previously visited websites that can be cleared on your Mac?
  3. Have you been able to previously clear the history on this device? If so, did you make any changes to your user account or Mac since last using this feature?

As far as the suggestions that you're seeing in Safari, are these appearing on the start page under Siri Suggestions? If so, you can deselect Siri Suggestions for Safari following the steps here:

Thanks for the screenshot, grace_25.

Is this your personal device, or is it managed by another entity, such as an employer or school? If it is a managed device, it may not be able to use this feature if the feature has been restricted by the organization setting the rules for it.

If this is a managed device, you'll want to reach out to the organization's IT contact for assistance, as it is their restriction.

If this is not a managed device, your best bet from here is to Contact Apple for support and service.

Hope that helps.

Yes this is helpful, thank you, but my problem is the button is greyed out, and I don't know how to change that.

(your questions):

  1. Yes the clear history button is grey, and I there aren't any 'history' options to click when I am not in a page (safari) yet.
  2. It shows all of the websites I have visited, yes, but I cannot delete any of it.
  3. This Mac is very new (September), so I haven't needed to until now, this is because I am now back at school (because of Covid-19) and need to delete all of my personal safari history.
