Disappearing iPad note markups

I am a law student and bought my iPad to read/take notes on PDFs using my Apple Pencil. Occasionally, all of the markups I’ve done on a PDF will disappear. Hours of notes will seemingly vanish out of nowhere with no way of recovery. It’s super frustrating and honestly shocking how such a bug (as well as a few other minor issues) could exist on my brand new iPad Pro.

I would greatly appreciate support to resolve this issue. I say respectfully that this $1000+ tablet I bought 2 months ago is unreliable at the fairly basic task I bought it for.

I saw this topic brought up in old forum, but I was unable to find any solutions. My iPad is on ios15.

Same here!!!

Please fix this problem...

For somehow reason, I am using apple pencil to write notes on PDF, and suddenly it scrolled up automatically and all the notes just gone...it's really annoying and hours of work just disappeared.

That markup feature IS part of the Apple Notes app!

So, ANY issues everyon is having editing/marking up text documents is due to that markup feature that IS part of the Apple Notes app!

That markup and save feature are all part of the Apple Notes app!

Just STOP using this problematic and flawed method of editng documents and find another third, party, Pencil compatible text/document/notes app to do your document editing instead!

I have had the same issue and I have been making sure to save my edits as you mention above. What I have found is that doesn't always work either. I have started getting into the habit of saving every 15 minutes. I have been working for a half and hour, saving once when the glitch occurred. When I went to revert to the saved version, I found that my earlier save wasn't there. Instead it only went back to the previous day, so I lost my 30 minutes of work. I have lost these same markups 3 times in the last 3 days.

I have just had an afternoon of work disappear. I was using my Apple Pencil to make notes on two separate PDF files from the iCloud files app, and suddenly the whole PDF was wiped clean. Everything is gone. How is there no way to save work on PDFs? What is the point of the Apple Pencil, if users are never sure if the work they do will be saved or be wiped clean.

I tried to recover the file, following the advice about files on iCloud on Apple Support, but it was nowhere.

A different PDF file I was working on a few days ago did save the Apple Pencil markups, so it’s not a consistent thing. But now I’m nervous to use the Apple Pencil to make notes on a PDF, because there’s no knowing if the notes will be saved or not.

PLEASE APPLE, come up with a solution to this!

Folks,

The solutuon is to use another app and work within the actual app with the actual PDF/documents file stored on your device. and within the app to edit.

STOP trying to edit documents/PDFs from a cloud source location.

STOP trying the edit documents from the Files app!

There are plenty of workarounds for this issue you all simply choose to ignore.

Apple has NOT addresed this issue for quite awhile, now.

You all need to use altenative methods to do your document/PDF creation/editing work until Apple gets this sorted, or not.

Same issue here. Just lost two hours worth of work marking up a contract. So frustrating.

MichelPM, it’s fine saying to use another app but this is not the point.

Customers buy and pay for a product that should work. I do not want to have to buy/get another app. I should be able to go into files, open a document, mark it up with handwritten notes using my pen and then save it knowing it is saved not lost with no way of recovery. This is absolutely unacceptable when Apple selling point for the iPad Pro is the ability to use the pen to do this type of work. Please Apple, resolve this problem asap. Thank you.

Yes and I do have the same problem too, I search it up on the internet to find possible solution but this turn out to be a bug, after taking notes I hit done and after that I tap the pdf to check my notes and all the notes just disappeared and it cannot be recovered, I got really frustrated I rather write it on a paper. Wish the next iOS update will fix this problem.

Same just happened to me twice. I spent hours editing a floor plan and when attempting to zoom out it all vanished. No way to undo or see previous version. Someone said use another app…but I didn’t see any suggestions on what free app to use?? Apple it would be great if you made it possible to see previous versions or previous edits!! Or an auto save! Please and thank you!

Find another app, it doesn't necessarily has/needs to be free!

Find an app that works!

There are plenty of paid notes apps that can hamdle many document/text formats.

LOTS of paid PDF apps!

Just find something that works and use it!

Examples of what I have on my iPad and I usem on a regular basis.

None are free, but ALL work as text and PDF editors and a few can even import some drawing/image formats.

Notability

Good Notes

Noteshelf

Goodreader

PDF Pro

PDF Expert

Many more options than this! MANY.

Y’all need to get away from just using free Apple apps!

There are apps/tools out there that CAN do the job you all need to do that get a LOT more regular, steady updates than Apple's own free apps, which ONLY,musually, get one major upgrade/update a year!

When a new iOS/iPadOS gets introduced/released.

Y’all need to just stop this insanity and find other third party apps that just wotk and do the job that all of you here are trying to accomplish.

Do some of your own research and search the iOS App Store, already!

All of my apple products are current on their software update and I’m going through the same issue. It’s gotta be a glitch or an oversight.

However, as of right now, the best solution for me has been to select that particular note that has your marked-up image, and then Send A Copy of it to your Apple device using Airdrop. Everything gets transferred over.

Hope this may help a bit.

same problem here. But I saved my pdf files in Notes, and then use Apple pencil to note important information on that file. During the mark-up process, sometimes I scrolled back to see whether the mark-ups were still there and they really were. But after 30 seconds I didn’t use the pencil anymore and done with my notes, took a look back and bam, all of the mark-ups were disappeared like they haven’t been there. I checked my Icloud storage, check the sync status but couldn’t find out the reason why. Still the same pdf but if I take notes by my old ipad Air 2 and don’t use Apple pencil, it’s totally fine. Not really sure what is happening with my Ipad Pro 12.9 even though I updated to the newest iOS.

this is literally the most frustrating bug I've ever dealt with on an iPad. this issue didn't exist on ios14, and now every PDF I have open for more than 9 minutes crashes and deletes anything I've annotated. I've tried everything I could think to like.... stop it, but it seems like an issue with the markup feature itself. of all the possible bugs for a tool used to take notes... it's one that deletes everything you write.

I have time and time, again here, told everyone to find alternative apps to using Apple's Notes app and markup feature, within the Apple Notes app.

Apple Notes app maybe free, but is of limited and, many times, flawed functionality.

Just end all of this insanity, already, and find another third app and procedures/features that just work!

I gave a reply/posting of an incomplete list of possible third party apps with MANY more than what I listed.

The Apple Notes app, and the function of the Markup tools feature within the Apple Notes app, ONLY gets upgrades/updates once a year, with every new introduction of iOS/iPadOS,in the Fall, and that is, usually, it for any more Notes app upgrades/updates.

The Apple Notes app has always been a barebones, somewhat basic note taking app with limited featues and with features added that have been long part of other, more popular, third party notes style apps.

Almost all third party apps get updates on a far more regular/frequenr basis and third party app developers actually listen their app users/customers.

Forget the Apple Notes apps and its faulty/flawed markup tools feature.

Find much better third party PDF/notes/document taking/editing apps that will actually work and will NOT delete your work without warning or cause.

Yes, we get it—we get it—WE GET IT!! Not everyone is spending hours reading through EVERY comment to find yours. They find a forum that relates to their issue and they comment their frustrations, as we all did in our original posts. The issue is not the Apple Notes app, as previously stated by multiple people. The issue is the markup feature available when you open a file.
