The Mail exclamation triangle now appears against my Gmail account, which however continues to send and receive all mail correctly. This false signal, which began about a week ago, does not apply to my other Mail accounts.. Shutting down and restarting the computer does not cure it.

Many thanks for your advice. A solution appeared after much trial and error: 1) Delete gmail account, 2) Create new gmail account with new password, 3) Close down and restart computer. The reason for the sudden emergence of the original problem remains mysterious.
