USB 3.0 Hub Broken on Mac OS Monterey 12.0.1

Since upgrading to Mac OS Monterey, solely the USB 3.0 port on my Hub has stopped working. Power is allowed to pass through to connected devices, however the transfer of data has stopped working.

Everything was working on Mac OS Big Sur, and it is only since updating to Monterey it has stopped working. I have found several reports on the developer forums for Mac OS stating this was an issue since around Beta 3 for some users, and there are reports on Reddit of other people having this issue.

Apple Support were useless and told me to bring my Mac in for repair (despite it only being 4 days old and the issue happening directly after an update) I took the Hub back to the place of purchase and they tested it on a Mac with Big Sur installed and it worked. When plugging it into another Mac that had been updated to Monterey the 3.0 Port stopped working.

It's an Advent Hub, not some dodgy knockoff one of Amazon. It worked absolutely fine prior to the Monterey upgrade.

Now when plugging in my iPhone via USB 3.0 or my Mouse, all that happens is the LED's on my mouse light up (but not the laser) or my iPhone charges, but won't connect to my Mac.

Oddly, both the HDMI and USB-C port on the hub continue to work as expected.

Same problem here. MacBook Pro 2017 Intel. VAVA hub perfectly working with Big Sur as well as the other 3 USB C ports with several peripherals (external SSD's etc.).

With Monterey installed Saturday:

no USB data exchange on hub

no USB C port working with two different peripherals.

I spent Sunday afternoon to happily downgrade back to Big Sur.

Everything is working perfectly again.

Issue: After Mac OS12 upgrade, some devices connected to USB-C hub ports not working. In my case, my Logitech mouse and keyboard worked, but my Logitech webcam did not. After considerable time, Apple support gave me the fix: 1. Turn off computer. 2. On left side of keyboard, press and hold Control & Option keys. 3. Still holding those 2 keys, on right side of keyboard to press Shift. 4. holding all three of those keys for 7 seconds, finally add holding down the Power key. 5. Hold down all four keys for another 7 seconds. 5. Release all keys, then press Power key. After computer reboots, my webcam worked again. I hope this works for you.

Followup - it's been a busy day for me.

I have found Monterey 12.1 to be a great help. But there are still many misses - I think some are deliberate.

So - original title: USB 3.0 Hub Broken on Mac OS Monterey 12.0.1 - answer, yes, yes it is.

  1. Update to Monterey 12.1 if you have these issues. A must do.
  2. Don't trust your current hardware. Only because Apple may not.
  3. I ordered a bunch of adapters/cables/hubs to test Apple. Mainly because I wanted to get this to work.
  4. I found configurations that would work. I found configurations that did nothing from Apple's POV (which work with Big Sur).
  5. For hubs, I found Anker and Sabrent to be almost always a "go". Didn't try any "Apple certified" solutions. There are certainly other brands that work well.
  6. For hubs, many are NOT a go. Cheap knockoffs (which work with Big Sur) don't work in Monterey.
  7. Cables/adapters - same scenario - some work, some don't. (I am aware of USB 3.x Gen X speed issues)

Bottom line - it appears that Apple is becoming "more strict" in allowing items to work - and we are in a process once again.

I now have a setup which seems aok, and quite a bit of "Apple does not approve anymore" items to return to Amazon (which I ABHOR doing, but necessary, I guess.)

NOTE: I did not test monitor access, though I do have one to test. One thing at a time.... ;)

Sorry if I'm duplicating information, but I'm having good success with StarTech hubs. I have a USB 3.0 and a USB 3.1 hub. Each is connected to a Mac mini (2018) USB 3.1 (Gen 2) Type C port. The USB 3.0 hub, itself, provides a Type C connector which is limited to 5 Gbps. The USB 3.1 hub ports are 10 Gbps (Type A connector).

Power distribution should be carefully considered. If I recall correctly, an external SSD would only function properly when connected to the Type C connector on the USB 3.0 hub. Also, be mindful of using the right USB cable (e.g. an older USB 2.0 cable limited the transfer rate to 480 Mbps).

I was forced to buy an M1 MacBook Air running Monterey because my 2017 MacBook Air had a catastrophic hardware failure. I was using a Logitech bluetooth mouse and keyboard with my old Mac, both of which have USB dongles. I bought an Anker hub and tried to use my Logitech keyboard with the Anker hub. My Mac failed to recognize the devices that used the dongles although I had no problem using my bluetooth printer. I thought the problem might be with the Anker hub so replaced it with the Belkin hub that was on the Apple web store (although no longer in stock -- had to buy elsewhere). The Apple technician I spoke with said her M1 Mac worked fine with that hub. Just opened it today, no luck. I've restarted, etc etc etc. Nothing. This is ridiculous...I was forced to spend $1000 to replace my 5-year-old Mac and now I can't use my mouse or external keyboard (both of which I need to sit at my desk and work). I'm beyond furious. Looks like I'm being forced to buy a new Apple keyboard and mouse since I can't make my old ones work at all. This is outrageous.
