Can't add google account to Monterey

Hello,

Is anyone able to help me? I saw that this was an issue on Sierra as well but I think Google has updated and so has the Monterey so the work arounds aren't working. Screen Caps below so you can see what's happening.

Simple Solution: Check the default browser, change the default browser to Safari and retry.

PS: If the default browser is already Safari, then change it to Chrome/ Firefox.

I really don't like Chrome's behaviour, so I used Microsoft Edge for Mac to add Google to Internet Accounts (in System Preferences). Here's what I did.

  1. Migrated data and settings from previous MacBook Air to M1 MacBook Air
  2. Google account authentication failed repeatedly
  3. Deleted Google account from Internet Accounts
  4. Under System Preferences > General, set Microsoft Edge (it's a Chromium browser) as the default browser
  5. Went back to Internet Accounts to add Google
  6. The authentication process now brought up my Google account in Edge where I chose the items I wanted to sync
  7. Quit Microsoft Edge
  8. Under System Preferences > General, set Safari as the default browser
  9. Voila! It's all working again.

Potential fix - simply open Chrome [edit - not sure this is repeatable]

When trying to add a Gmail account to Mail/System Preferences - Internet Accounts on my MacBook Pro (Monterey):

I clicked Gmail, then saw the blank dialog box.

Then I just opened Chrome and the authentication page automagically appeared.

I entered my credentials, and specified which services to use (mail, calendar, notes.)

Then I confirmed the account was in Internet Accounts and in the Mac Mail app, and closed Chrome.

Hope this helps.

The solution is to quit Apple Mail (or Calendar), then change your default web browser from whatever it is, to a different one. Then open Mail/Calendar and try again.

I had to change from Safari to Chrome to get it to work. Any other browser should work. You can change your default browser back to Safari as soon as you get Mail/Calendar working again.
