I am struggling to import media onto FCPX

When I press on the import button, and then navigate to desktop, it doesn't doesn't show me what's on my desktop in a drop down menu thing, even when I toggle it on and off, so I cannot access the files on my desktop, where all my videos are. Here is a screenshot. I have tried the drag and drop option, which works fine, but when it does that, it automatically copies files to the library, whereas I want to leave files in place. Any help would be much appreciated.

This is Monterey, and the latest version of FCPX

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 12.0

I have solved it now, I need to allow FCPX full disk access. It obviously changed my settings when it updated. Thank anyway for all your help, I have learnt something new about importing!

That's weird. Not sure what you're looking at. Those folders, Desktop, Movies, etc are not on the root level Macintosh HD. You should see a user at the top like this.

Macintosh HD should show you this

Copying into the library depends on the Import preferences and where exactly you're dragging from. Some files can't be left in certain places. If the files can be left in place you can toggle the behavior with the Option key.

Okay, here's another screen shot, I still have the same problem. For some weird reason , the desktop icon has a little down arrow, like a download button, next to it?

Ah, that is helpful, I see how to do that now, thank so much.

Still am a little concerned why I can't import the other way, I am hoping it's a bug to do with the new updates.

Importing with drag and drop is working as expected. There are multiple factors in what you can import from where to where and is also dependent on Import prefs.

It looks like you’re pointed at the iCloud Desktop. You can’t import from there. Media must be stored locally on your real desktop.
