Using older Mac as second monitor

Hey guys - have an older 2012 iMac and trying to connect to a new iMac to use as 2nd monitor. Connected with Thunderbolt cable and Thunderbolt vis C adapter, tried the command F2 but no go. Tried using original keyboard from 2012 Mac, still no go. Any ideas??

Using an older Imac (2013) for a second monitor on new Imac (2020) I have followed every instruction that Apple has about connecting my older Imac, (late 2013) 21.5 inch to my 27" 2020 Imac. I have the Thunderbolt cable 3.3 ft, as well as the newest adapter which is the USB-C allowing the connection from the Thunderbolt 2 cable to the new Imac. I restarted both machines, and did the Command+F2, nothing. The screen is supposed to go black and come back on as a monitor only. It does not. The older Imac is running Catalina, the new is running Big Sur 11.2.1. What am I doing wrong??? I really need this second monitor. I also tried using my older Cinema screen, that also will not work. I have the original keyboard for both machines. Any other suggestions??? Thank you!

I got a new MacBook Pro (13-inch 2020) and want use an old iMac 27-inch (late 2013) as an external display. I connected the two computers with a thunderbolt cable. I used the "display" option in the preference but cannot activate the second monitor I got a new MacBook Pro (13-inch 2020) and want use an old iMac 27-inch (late 2013) as an external monitor. I connected the two computers with a thunderbolt cable (with the right USB-C adaptor to connect i macbook pro) but I could not make it. I remember in the past when I could use another 27-inch iMac to my imac 27-in by pressing "command F2". But there is no "F2" button on the macbook pro keyboard! Any idea?

Connecting old iMac to new 24" iMac as Secondary Monitor I have a new 24" Mac, and I want to connect my old, 2010-vintage iMac as a second monitor. I have the Thunderbolt cable and adapter. I no longer have the original wireless keyboard from the old iMac but can connect the new Magic keyboard with a Lightning cable and it works well. I checked all the equipment and it works on another Mac. But Command-F2 and nothing happens. Same equipment, same set up, same process but a different result. Is there something about these new 24" iMacs that do not allow them to connect to older vintage equipment as a monitor? Is there an additional step needed for the new Macs?

You cannot use the 2012 iMac as a second monitor for a new iMac. That configuration is no longer supported by Apple.

The target display mode was deprecated by Apple in software with the release of Big Sur and was excluded in 2014 and newer iMacs.
