Airpods suddenly renamed with strange characters

My airpods used to have an actual name, but are suddenly popping up with strange characters. I included the software update notification in the screen grab because I'm wondering if that's supposed to address this. Earlier today, the airpods also connected to a call with a client and I was able to hear them, but for some reason, they were unable to hear me, but when I changed to wire headphones, they were able to hear me without adjusting anything on their end, so it had to have been my airpods. Unrelated to airpods, when I look at videos on my iPhone 11the videos either don't start, or start and get choppy, like they're glitching out. No one else has access to my phone. Do airpods get updated with macbook software updates? Does anyone know why I've been running into these issues?

AirPod's Name:

What you are seeing is the name of these AirPods. So, where were they purchased? Where they purchased from Apple? Or were purchased off of the internet somewhere? Or somewhere else? If purchased from Apple, it would seem to be a retuned item that was never disassociated from the previous buyer's name (something that I came across on my 2017 MBP).

Thanks for your response, but I'm not quite sure that's it. I'd received these from my mom who got them from Apple directly, and I'd already changed the name she had them under to mine once they came into my possession months ago. So it's been renamed to a name I'd given it since I've had it, and then suddenly went into these characters seemingly out of nowhere.
