2021 14inch MacBook Pro external display capabilities?

What is the maximum resolution and refresh rate that the new base model 14” MacBook Pro can utilise with an external monitor connected via a USB C to Display-port cable?

Is it capable of running a 144hz 1440p display? Or could it drive a 4K display at the 144hz refresh rate?

Thanks

MacBook Pro

I have the base model M1 Pro 14 inch MBP. It supports external monitor with 4K 144hz.

I connect the MBP to Gigabyte M28U (28inch, 4K 144hz), using USB-C to DP cable.

Hi Danwat97,

I don't think the 14" MacBook Pro can support 144Hz, although I could be wrong. Here's the Tech Specs sheet, which mentions that at 6K, the maximum refresh rate is 60Hz: MacBook Pro 14- and 16-inch - Technical Specifications - Apple

Also, the ProMotion built-in display can only accelerate up to 120 Hz. Because of this, I doubt that it will support external monitors at 144Hz.

External displays at up to 60Hz at up to 6K resolution at up to billions of colors. That is a whole lot of data and it REQUIRES DisplayPort family connection.

The provided HDMI 1.4 connection can only attain 4K at 60Hz and that with special "Certified" High speed cables.

Refresh rates as high as 144Hz are mostly specmanship. Ordinary computer devices cannot realistically attain those kinds of refresh rates. (but the built-in display can come close at up to 120Hz under certain conditions).
