Exchange sync issues with Apple Mail app on macOS Monterey

Hi, ever since I upgraded to Monterey on my MBA, my mails (exchange) just won't sync properly in the app. They start downloading first but it stops. The Activity Monitor shows as if the download is frozen. New mails don't show up whereas it's working fine on my iPhone and iPad. However, the new mails get downloaded when I force quit the app and reopen it. Otherwise if I keep the app open, new mails stop downloading. I have tried doing the following but it hasn't worked. Is it an issue with Monterey OS that might get fixed in an upcoming OS upgrade since the Mail app was working like a charm on BigSur.


  • Rebuilt the mailbox
  • Reconfigured the mailbox by first deleting it from Internet Accounts
  • Tried manual IMAP and SMTP server settings
  • Deleted mail profile in Library
  • Reinstalled Monterey OS


What else can I do? Am stuck. And I don't want to use the Microsoft Outlook app for macOS. I like the native Apple Mail app.

Ok, I've finally managed to get my Mail to communicate with Exchange. I first removed my old Exchange email account and then reopened it. I noticed that under User Name it had my email address so once I changed that back to my User Name and entered server address manually. That did the trick.

Hi, yes and no. I booted once in safe mode. Everything looked fine there and when I booted again normally, it started syncing. It downloaded past mails of atleast 8-10 months. However, it stops syncing every now and then but starts again when I force quit the Mail app. Even now, it shows downloading some 7000+ mails but the bar doesn’t move if I see it in the Activity Monitor. Also, since it’s downloading past emails, it doesn’t show me any new mails that I get unless I force quit. Never had to face such a problem in all these past years since I’ve been using exchange mail on Apple Mail app on Mac. I am inclined to believe this is a bug which I hope Apple or Microsoft should pick up and fix it soon. It’s causing productivity loss. The only other fix I can potentially see is using Outlook App which I don’t want to.

I am having the same issue with the mail app, but with Gmail mail. I have tried everything in the book and have had a case with apple tech support for 3 weeks now, they have finally given up and say this is a known issue but engineering does not have an answer and they are looking into it. How long that will take is not known, I was told it might be weeks or months before this is fixed. I find it very interesting that OS Monterey is having issues with apple's own applications, but it works fine with 3rd party applications. I am having similar issues with iMovie since I upgraded to Monterey. This new OS launch seems to be the most problematic in recent history and very interesting that they have not had any updates since launch. It is unfortunate that apple has turned into an organization that doesn't really care about functionality as long as they can sell more iPhones.

Sharing an update since I first raised the issue here. The Exchange account now seems to be working, although I sometime have to manually 'get new messages' and it doesn't download them on its own or takes long. But the manual intervention works.


I don't know what fixed it- not completely but at least to make it less painful and somewhat functional but a few things I noticed:

  • I had added 3 mail accounts- Exchange, Outlook.com, and an AOL. Looks like exchange sync was misbehaving since the outlook.com account was also syncing
  • the bug for sure is that it took literally a week to download mails of past year. It never took that long, and I have a Gigabit connection
  • Once all the mail accounts were synced, I guess its better now, though still not perfect
  • The other thing I tried was deleting my exchange account from my iPad and iPhone and then configuring it afresh. I really don't know if that fixed it or not


Though am surprised why there hasn't been a version update to the macOS, am sure Apple is tracking other bugs too. This really is a long wait.

Same issues. Have been using exchange with apple mail for years without issue. I have a MacPro and MacBook Pro. Both upgraded to Monterey. Now mail app does not work. I tried deleting my exchange account. When I type in password with the connect automatically option, it says the PW is wrong (it isn't). If I configure manually and paste in identical PW, it will work, mail will load all messages, but still won't send. Runs super slow/buggy and takes forever to open messages. I have tried starting in safe mode. No difference. Help!

After upgrading to Monterey, Mail will not retrieve new mail from Exhange. I tried creating a new Exchange account, but then Mail lost all my folders. (With Outlook I can see that they are still in Exchange, so not lost forever, fortunately.) I have tried safe reboot, restarting Mail, moving the folders in ~/Library/Mail/ away, editing the Internet account, all to no avail.

I have also looked at the log messages in Console, but see nothing obviously broken there (except that no mail is being retrieved). Would anyone at Apple be helped by my log messages in locating the issue?

So, from reading the thread above there is a bug which has yet to be rectified by Apple, correct? I installed Monterey last night and am OK on my iPhone with my Microsoft Exchange email account in Mail, but no on my MacBook Pro, which is both frustrating and time consuming. I have switched to Outlook in the meantime. Might someone from Apple let us customers know what the situation is? I do not want to waste my time nor my IT vendor's time trying to rectify the issue if it is indeed a bug which is going to be addressed in the next update.
