MacBook Pro 2017 new hard drive issues

I have a 2017 MacBook Pro bought a new hard drive for more space. it shows up on disk utility but when I try to install The operating system no disk shows up. when I go back into disk utility to try to erase it or change it it won’t let me. it’s not highlighted it won’t let me. Also it’s supposed to be a 500 GB why is it only saying 2GB?

The MacOS base system is only 2GB. That's not a physical drive of any type, at 2GB it would be virtually worthless.


As has been said, your SSD is either damaged or not properly seated. You need to pull it and reseat it firmly but not over forcefully.


Information on the MacOS Base System is rather obtuse to say the least, at least all I could find. I don't think I'd do anything with it for now unless you know precisely what it is. Maybe someone here will chime in.


As to the reinstallation, shut down and start all over. If you have an external enclosure, test the drive on a different computer.
