I am trying to install iOS 14.8.1 on my iPhone X, but every time I try I get a little pop up window saying “Software Update Failed, An error occurred downloading iOS 14.8.1”. No error code is given. I have tried freeing up memory by offloading apps and deleting photos (phone now says 60.3 GB of 64 GB used). I have also restarted my phone a couple of times. Still getting the message! Any suggestions?

You may need to free up more space, 4 gigs of free space may not be enough.
Can you post a screenshot of the whole screen, it could reveal why you aren't able to update.
Make sure you:
• Are using a WiFi connection (not a hotspot).
• Have an active cell service
• Have your battery charged at least 50%. Better yet, keep it plugged in during the update.
• Are not using a VPN connection.
• Do not have power save mode turned on.
• Do not have a beta version installed.
• You have at least 6 gigs of storage available.

I succeeded in updating to iOS 15 by connecting my phone to my computer. Trying it on my phone only resulted in the error message and also the message that I didn't have enough free space on the phone. The last time I updated (now I remember I had to do it on the phone that time, too) I deleted a bunch of stuff that in the end I didn't need to have deleted.
It took two tries because the first time the process didn't present me with the policy agreement section, but there was no indication what the problem was. So I tried it again and that time it worked. Be prepared for it to take a good half hour to complete. And also, there was no request to delete stuff to make more space.

I have an iPhone 12 mini, plenty of storage space, WiFi connection, good battery and I can’t install this update.
The unusual part was that it glitch the first time and wanted to download the 15.0 update and then told me I needed to install 14.8 first however it won’t let me and now the 15 update disappeared.
Had the same issue for days and the thread helped so thought I would share what I did. I skimmed through my pictures and deleted as much of the non important ones, deleted from the recently deleted folder. I then removed as many of my apps as possible (even the ones I know I absolutely need), just for the sake of the upgrade. Did the upgrade and re-added them thereafter. That worked with ease. Hope this helps anyone still having an issue
I tried to download the iOS 15.1 update and it said error. Now when I try to go back it shows this.
I’m also having the same issue. I have cell service and a full battery. I also accepted the terms and conditions.
I have the exact same error message attempting to download 14.8.01 and can’t resolve it through offloading apps.

One sec. I’m downloading iOS 15.1 instead of 14. If that works then ima let you know

You need to turn off Low Power Mode for the update to install
