I am trying to install iOS 14.8.1 on my iPhone X, but every time I try I get a little pop up window saying “Software Update Failed, An error occurred downloading iOS 14.8.1”. No error code is given. I have tried freeing up memory by offloading apps and deleting photos (phone now says 60.3 GB of 64 GB used). I have also restarted my phone a couple of times. Still getting the message! Any suggestions?

You may need to free up more space, 4 gigs of free space may not be enough.
Can you post a screenshot of the whole screen, it could reveal why you aren't able to update.
Make sure you:
• Are using a WiFi connection (not a hotspot).
• Have an active cell service
• Have your battery charged at least 50%. Better yet, keep it plugged in during the update.
• Are not using a VPN connection.
• Do not have power save mode turned on.
• Do not have a beta version installed.
• You have at least 6 gigs of storage available.

And by the way , the comment about not enough signal is BS it doesn’t work either way
I never responded to you about enough signal, and no it's not BS, it's one of several criteria that must be met to perform an upgrade.
I’m also having the same issue. I have cell service and a full battery. I also accepted the terms and conditions.

I have the exact same problem and message on my 6s. I have almost 35GB available. So that is not the problem as stated in answer.
I can’t find the update in a long list of apps. I recognize all the apps.
