Final Cut Pro version 10.6 extremely slow!!!

I installed the 10.6 FCPX update on my 27" iMac (late 2015) and my editing has been extremely slow ever since. If I just add one transition between two clips, I have to wait a minute or two (with the rotating beachball) before I can do anything else.

I also tried it on my MacBook Pro (16" 2019) and it acts the same way. Very annoying and counter productive.

I also just updated both machines with the macOS Monterey version 12.0.1 iOS, however I was having the problems before I did that.

Is anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions?

Hi, Tom! Yes, glad there are data-only backups. However, my issue is that my media rides with the Library and not on a linked folder. This is because some 90% of my media is AVCHD, and at the time it made sense, on importing, to copy those files to my Library, since I couldn't put my hands on the AVCHD footage as individual files.

If I had to do it all over, I'd import the AVCHD files and then, right away, convert them to Optimized ProRes files, which I could then put on a linkable folder and not copied to the Library And then I'd delete the AVCHD. Too late now, as I have some 32 hours of AVCHD.

So for me, having the data-only backups in 10.5.4 is of no use, since the media is copied — and therefore also updated to 10.6 — to my Library.

The Apple FCP Manual is great, but wish there was also a Best Practices manual to lay out the implications of the many choices we have to make. Those implications are not always obvious in the Manual.

Thanks!

The media itself is not changed, just the library structure.

You can either:

a) Open (slowly) the library in 10.6, choose a location outside the library and consolidate;

or

b) With FCP not running, open the package contents, and make a Finder copy of the media folders inside the library to some external location

Then you can open a backup library or an exported xml in 10.5.4 and relink the media.

I'm using an Intel iMac from last year. It looks like I'll have to create a new library with the older version and re-import everything that I'm not too far into and re-do it.

The main issue I'm having is when a project is opened, it takes a few minutes to load. It seems that as project complexity increases, the length of time it takes for the initial load goes shooting up.

I am one of the older Macs with the problems (2015) using 10.6. I was hoping for a new release. Bottom line? 10.6.1 is out today but unless you meet the new specs, it is the end of the line for you and upgrades. Face it, the old machines served us well. Time to get up to date. My new max tricked-out MacPro will arrive the first week of Dec. and my woes will be gone. So let Saigons be bygones! Good luck!

I have a 2015 MacPro (then tricked out to the max with 2 G RAM for video. 10.6 says you need the very minimum of at least 4 G but even more is preferable. 10.6.1 the same. Check on “Requirements for 10.6.1” and see if your machine complies. Those whose machines do and had these problems report that 10.6.1 fixes things. My old silver horse needs to be sent off to the glue factory:-)

Is there

In addition to what Tom asks, did you reset FCP preferences? Hold option and command when launching FCP and choose Delete Preferences. FCP will open with the default Untitled library. Open the library you were working on, set the prefs back to the way you like them (disable background rendering, etc.) and see if it behaves better.

STILL SLOW!!!

I've updated to 10.6.1 on my 2019 Mac Pro (3.2ghz 16 core, 192GB ram, Pro Vega II 32GB) and still having issues with FCP being extremely slow with simple edits: moving clips around, making simple cuts, etc. It's also still very slow when using Multicam clips.

For you that say it's completely fixed now, are you not seeing any issues with slow editing still?? I'm still puling my hair out and trying to go back to 10.5.4 now with a current project.

@photowinz, start a new thread (this one is getting long with parallel conversations) and include an Etrecheck report. Use the "Additional text" button below and paste the entire report into the pane. The report will give the hivemind here a chance to help you diagnose why your system isn't working well. There are so many potential reasons, like updating the macOS in place year after year rather than doing a clean install, using an app "cleaner" that actually damages the ProApps, installing Chrome and its problematic keystone daemons which break the system's video toolbox... The list goes on but we can't help you figure it out without more system info, which is what the Etrecheck report does.

Complete joke is beyond true. This is the most ridiculous thing ever Apple. Please fix.

I have 4K footage from Sony A7III (simple mp4 files)

playing in a 4K timeline I get audio sync problems with frequencies and beach balls like every single movement. Cut, beach ball, trim, you guessed it. Anything I do.

so what do I do? Scale down and play proxies.

did a 25% proxy and still no good playback. This is almost impossible to work with. Just a joke. Takes nearly five seconds or more to play after I press space or L and takes longer to stop. This is the worst update I’ve ever got.

if I had to keep my object tracking in another program til this bug was worked out, I would have. ****.

My Specs

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017)

Processor 2.9 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

Memory 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3

Graphics Radeon Pro 560 4 GB

Intel HD Graphics 630 1536 MB

Storage 44.95 GB Available of 500GB SSD

I wish that were the case, you see, it’s been this way ever since I cleared space. Nearly 240gb and still having major audio issues. Like you ever heard when frequencies don’t match up, or it takes hours to load a timeline. It’s not the space. I know my own machine.

I was not posting for a resolution, however I appreciate your response, Tom, I was simply hoping to add to the record of folks who are experiencing this audio issue on the latest version of fcp seems to be on Big Sur and Monterey according to others.

Nov 24, 2021 10:56 AM in response to Tom Wolsky

Ok but others are also having this issue. I would definitely agree my performance is abnormal, however, it’s possible there have been a couple of folks having this same issue. May do a hard reinstall of fcp. Sometimes that is a good fix.

my main goal was just to promote it’s a thing. Kinda like all those people who have abnormal **** downs on their M1 Mac. Yes it’s abnormal, but doesn’t mean it’s not happening to folks.

just like my iPhone X … abnormal green screen, or the iPhone 6 Plus, abnormal for a phone to bend but it did. See what I mean. Lol

Same issues in FCP 10.6 as well as 10.6.1

Extremely long load times and very long audio waveform render times. Stripped FCP 10.6.1 down to the bare bones removing all plugins and effects both video and audio. No change.

Mac OS 12.01 and even something higher.

Final Cut Pro version 10.6 extremely slow!!!
