Final Cut Pro version 10.6 extremely slow!!!

I installed the 10.6 FCPX update on my 27" iMac (late 2015) and my editing has been extremely slow ever since. If I just add one transition between two clips, I have to wait a minute or two (with the rotating beachball) before I can do anything else.

I also tried it on my MacBook Pro (16" 2019) and it acts the same way. Very annoying and counter productive.

I also just updated both machines with the macOS Monterey version 12.0.1 iOS, however I was having the problems before I did that.

Is anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions?

UPDATE: Yes, Terry, rolling back to FCPX 10.5.4 is the best advice. After I did that (and luckily my most critical Library had not been updated to 10.6 yet), everything worked as fine as before, even with it running on Monterey 12.0.1. So it looks like the issue is with FCPX 10.6 and not Monterey. But as I said before, it could be a problematic combination with both of those in play at the same time.

Is anyone from Apple Engineering listening in?

Friendly obvious advice: please make sure you backup to Time Machine regularly and before any updates — it's a life saver, especially in reinstalling an earlier version of FCPX. Also, save a copy of your Library in the current FCPX version before updating to a newer version. Once the Library is updated, there's no going back to an earlier version unless you have a backup Library from that version.

Good luck to everyone here in trying to work around this! "Frustrating" hardly begins to describe it.

Ok but others are also having this issue. I would definitely agree my performance is abnormal, however, it’s possible there have been a couple of folks having this same issue. May do a hard reinstall of fcp. Sometimes that is a good fix.

my main goal was just to promote it’s a thing. Kinda like all those people who have abnormal **** downs on their M1 Mac. Yes it’s abnormal, but doesn’t mean it’s not happening to folks.

just like my iPhone X … abnormal green screen, or the iPhone 6 Plus, abnormal for a phone to bend but it did. See what I mean. Lol

Same issues in FCP 10.6 as well as 10.6.1

Extremely long load times and very long audio waveform render times. Stripped FCP 10.6.1 down to the bare bones removing all plugins and effects both video and audio. No change.

Mac OS 12.01 and even something higher.

Working on FCP 10.6.1

2020 M1 Macbook pro

16Gb ram

Mac Os Monterey (12.0.1)

Even now the FCP is working very sluggish, even a single 1080p 30 fps video on timeline gives frame skipping. Scrubbing in the timeline is very slow. Rendering takes ages to finish. An 8-minute video with some simple cut in 1080p 30fps with h.264 took around 30 mins to render out (Not exaggerating, literally happened) Give the Color wheel even for Extending the Clip's endpoints. I don't know what more issue it should have, Very disappointed updating it.

Hi all,

The slow rendering issue can make FCP really useless. It is a scandal.

I have a brand new Mac Pro 2019 with 2x graphic cards, 96 GB RAM etc. I am working with thunderbolt 2 and 3 drives and a SATA drive via thunderbolt adapter (I never use more than 70% of a disk). This combination works very well for me. I have worked with a Mac Pro (Late 2013 = cylinder) since years and was very happy with FCPX in last years. I am waiting since 1,5 hour right now for rendering+exporting of a 1 hour 1080p movie (yes, with a lot of FX, etc.) and it is now at 63%. This is really unacceptable and far more than frustrating. As I've said, the machine is new, I have installed everything clean. Even with new downloads from AppStore etc.. My experience (I am editing since mid 1990s and working with FCP since 7.) whispers to my ear that the issue has nothing to do with filled up disks or some FX or some file formats. This is directly related to FCP. (It is now 1h 45 min and rendered is 66% of the 1h timeline!)

Sorry for the long message.

umit
