Monterey killed my MacBook Pro.

I was updating my MacBook Pro from 2018 and it was doing fine until the screen suddenly turned black and now it won't turn on. I've checked the outlet, the cable, the brick, everything. I've held power for 10 seconds and nothing happens. I have no signs of life on my MacBook.

Any suggestions?

Just so everybody knows, Apple did an “exception” and agreed to fix my 2016 Mac. The service is ready and I’m picking it up tomorrow.

A bricked pc because of an OS update is something it shouldn’t happen. Apple maybe should consider stop pushing firmware updates together with OS updates. I’m not an engineer, but this seems to have been the reason.

Latvia. Here they don’t have Apple Stores, so I took it to an Authorized Service Center, and called Apple explaining what happened. At first they said it was a hardware failure and software can’t cause hardware failure, but then I collected over 20 links of posts here on Apple forums and from tech news websites reporting on the issue. The Senior Adviser then called me saying he was “granting me an exception” to fix what they screwed up with this update.

On the phone, I always kept civil and respectful. Also mentioned that it feels like planned obsolescence, specially with the transition from Intel to their own chips. All those update problems affected only Intel Macs.

Update y’all, scroll to the bottom for tldr.

I picked up my MacBook from the Apple store after I refused to pay that service, I had asked them to remove the logicboard so that I could scrap the parts and not worry about saved data but they said they couldn’t do it- good thing they couldn’t.

Previously my MacBook Pro 2018 would not turn on after a software update, taking it to the store they could not get it to power on at all, they confirmed it was not a battery issue but said it was a logicboard issue.

I took it home and my partner wanted to give a try and used this video and followed it accordingly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evvTbMTOskc&t=1185s and y’all … it turned on. It said the battery needed to be charged and we charged it and it was on! We are reinstalling the software now but things look promising.

hope this helps:

Update:

he fixed it, and was able to update it to the latest software. He followed the video which uses apples app btw.

it didn’t work perfectly but he restarted the process a couple of times (like installing the software took 3 tries) but guys it turns on and is running. I didn’t have to pay that 600 bs.

i would say try that video I linked if you are all out of options, worth a shot atleast.

I have had the same issue. After updating, the 15 inch MacBook Pro 2018 couldn't be used when I unplugged the powercable, it turned off and it was a question wether or not I could restart it. Working in a workplace were I have to be in different offices, it was extremely irritating...

I noticed a post on a forum, where it was mentioned that the firmware could be damaged and that I had to contact the apple support center. I phoned and they didn't recognised the problem. While talking to a senior 'problem solver', he said it would be highly inprobable that the firmware would be corrupted by updating to Monterey. After almost an hour, he came to the conclusion that the firmware might be corrupted and that it had to be revived by using another MacBook using a T2 chip, or a clean install OS. Because the installation also puts new firmware on the machine, that might be helping.

In different combinations I did manage to turn on the laptop (close the laptop, take out the powerchord, wait several seconds and put in in the left front (nearest to me) port. Open the laptop and using left CTRL, OPTION, right Shift it started up. Once turning on, the machine keeps working. After a clean install, (at startup push OPTION, CMD, + R) all the problems are gone now...

The biggest challenge was to get the computer to turn on. I tried several things and on several occasions, it turned on using different techniques...

Hope it works for you....

Try to reset the SMC at boot(left shift + ctrl + option + power) for 7 seconds and it restarts when you see the apple logo, release all except the power button, keep holding the power button for another 7 seconds. This resets the fans and the battery which might solve your issue concerning the power.
