M1 iMac not detecting USB keyboard A1243

Hi~

I have just got my new M1 iMac, and I am frustrated.

Because my new iMac does not detect the usb keyboard. The keyboard is from Apple, A1243.

It works just fine with my macbook, and another iMac that I have.

No problem at all.

But my latest new M1 iMac simply ignores its existence.

I am writing this question with the usb keyboard on my mackook. So, the usb keyboard is ok.

My macbook and M1 iMac both are running MacOS Monterey. So the OS is not a culprit, either.

I throughly checked if the usb ports on the iMac are ok by plugging a mighty mouse into each of them, all works fine. The usb ports are ok.

I have come to a conclusion that there might be something with the M1 processor.

Can somebody please help me with this?

@hcsitas, thank you for suggesting ... something.

However, I should say how my keyboard is old is not an issue here.

Using the touchid keyboard does not solve the problem either.

The problem is the device which is totally fine and working well with other macs (of course, through usb-c port), and is supposed to be fine with M1 iMac as well is not working when coupled with M1 iMac!

BTW, I found a weirdest solution the other day (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252789068).

The funny thing is, it actually worked!!

The moment I turned on the bluetooth TouchId keyboard, my M1 iMac magically started to recognize A1243 usb keyboard. Now I am having no problem using my beloved A1243 keyboard, and I am happy, except that I have to keep the bluetooth keyboard on all the time, which is unacceptable.

It reminds me of the memory of the iPhone battery gate.

Hope tech guys in Apple will resolve this issue soon.

There have been some unusual problems with some of the older Apple USB keyboards. Many people have found that if you use the extension cord that came with the keyboard the problems go away. I too use a 2010 vintage keyboard with my 2019 iMac and have no problems (but have always run with the extension attached as my desk set up requires it). I've never heard why the extension cord corrects the situation.

What extension cord are you referring to? I use usb-c to usb-a connector I bought from apple online store.

In the mean time, my wired keyboard started not working properly since. It is so frustrating.

BTW, for me, A1243 is not what I would call a 'vintage' keyboard,

I would like to say at least A1048 or earlier ones are 'vintage' ones.

I am referring to a 1 meter long extension cord that originally came with the Keyboard (upper left in the attached photo). I too am using the A1243 keyboard. I like it so much I bought a new spare a couple of years ago just as they were becoming scarce. You may still be able to find them. The extension is a little unusual in that it differs from a normal USB cord in that it has a male USB connector at one end and a female at the other end.

Sadly, I have no recollection of seeing such extension cable. I did have bought A1243 three or four times though.

So I decided to get another one and check if the box has the extension cable.

I just checked apple store and found out they no longer sell this keyboards. Sad.

So sad because I love this keyboard. The height of each key is just perfect. It just feels so good in comparison to apple's latest "spanking" keyboards that feels very uncomfortable.

Anyway, thanks for the good information, if I have chance to get my hands on the cable, I would definitely give it a try!

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files
