All desktop files hidden after Monterey update

After launching Monterey, all my desktop files were invisible. Panic. It took a while to realize they were hidden, and Command-Shift-Period made them all visible. But none of these files or folders start with a period. And I don't want to see all the hidden files in every finder window. If I type Command-Shift-Period again, of course all the normally hidden files vanish, and so do all my desktop files. What's going on? How do I fix this?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.0

Move them out of the Trash to where they should be located.

Your application may need to have the "Full Disk Access" privilege (especially if your user folder is on an external drive).
