The best protection for your iPad screen is to keep it clean and free from dust and grit. Additionally, you might use a good quality screen protector designed for your model of iPad - such as from Zagg. Pencil tips are consumable items; ensure that you replace the Pencil tip as soon as any wear can be seen.

Adding a rubber tip will not protect the screen from damage. Silicone rubber tips are used to increase friction between the pencil and iPad screen - preferred by some to improve the “feel” when writing and drawing.

The biggest cause of damage to screens, when using the Pencil, is scratching from dust and grit particles. Perhaps counter intuitively, dust and grit will cause damage to the harder material (the iPad screen) before that of a softer material (such as the pencil tip or rubber cap). This is because the hard grit material will first embed in the softer material - and will then be dragged across the screen causing scratches.

Whilst iPad screens have a hard-coat - and are extremely robust - damage can and will occur if you are not careful to keep the screen and pencil tip absolutely clean. A screen protector provides a comparatively cheap sacrificial layer that is easy to replace should damage occur - unlike the screen of an iPad which is the most expensive component of an iPad.
