Phantom messages notifications icon in Monterey

I upgraded to Monterey this weekend and now messages says I have 18 notifications. I have no notifications on my apple watch or iphone. I tried killall Dock and turning off notifications and turning them back on. I've tried restarting. One thing I haven't tried is resetting the home folder permissions. Is this something I should do and if so how to do you do that on Monterey? It seems like it's changed since previous releases of OSX.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities fmitc042,

Thanks for posting! From our understanding, after updating to macOS Monterey, you are seeing a notification for unread messages in the Message app but you are not seeing any unread messages on your other devices, is that right? Do you use Messages in iCloud? It should like the read messages may not be syncing. Do you see any unread threads in the Messages app on your Mac itself?

You can try turning off Messages in iCloud and then turning it back on to force it to sync again: Use Messages in iCloud

Hope that helps!

Hi Karina,

That is correct. I upgraded to Monterey over the weekend and ever since I have 18 unread icon in the messages app. This is not the case on my Apple Watch or iPhone. I do use iCloud across all devices. I tried manually clicking through each message thread in messages and the icon still did not go away. I just tried disabling and re-enabling sync and that did not solve the problem either. I also tried making a second test account on my Macbook Pro and signing in with iCloud to see if it would pull down all my messages from iCloud and if the 18 unread icon will still be present. When I turned on sync it tried to download but just sat on the downloading screen for hours and never completed the sync. I'm wondering if this is a bug with iCloud and Monterey or something.

fmitc042,

If that the case, the best option may be to reinstall the macOS. Doing this will not remove any data on your Mac, however, you should have a backup of your data just in case. You can follow the steps here to perform the reinstall: How to reinstall macOS.

If this continues after following those steps, you may want to reach out to Apple Support for further assistance. Depending on your region, you may be able to reach them here: Get Support.

Have a good one!
