Always having to wait before being able to horizontally scroll after vertically scrolling on iPhone 13 Pro Max

Hey everyone!

This is my first ever iPhone so I'm not sure if this is a defective product or if this is just how all iPhones are for some reason.

There's a really annoying issue whereby if you try to horizontally scroll after vertically scrolling, it always registers as a vertical scroll unless you wait for a while. Sometimes you have to wait two seconds or more before you can actually horizontally scroll.

It's almost as if the screen is remembering the scroll momentum. Even trying to stop the scrolling momentum by putting my finger down on the screen for a second still doesn't solve the issue.

Example: If you're scrolling on Instagram and see a post with multiple pictures where you can swipe right to see more, you have to wait for a few seconds before you can actually swipe on the post otherwise all horizontal swipes will just carry on registering as vertical scrolling.

I thought it might be the app but it happens even on native apps like the Photos app when you're scrolling through your albums. I've also tried reverting back to 60hz screen refresh rate and that didn't help either.

Can anyone confirm if this is a known issue or is this just somehow normal for iPhones? Or is there a setting that I'm overlooking?

Any help would be hugely appreciated! Thank you!

Sunny

Hi __sunny,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help with your iPhone 13 Pro Max and scrolling. It sounds like you are experiencing a slight delay when switching scroll directing vertically to horizontally.

Let's try the steps here: If the screen isn’t working on your iPhone or iPad.

Also be sure you have updated to iOS 15.1: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Let us know if the issue continues.

Have a fantastic day!

Hi MichaelB2019,

Thank you so much for the response!

Unfortunately, I have tried what you have mentioned and it did not work and I am definitely on the latest iOS 15.1 as well.

Weirdly, I have been to the Apple Store and actually found this to be an issue on the iPhone 13 Pro Max that was on display as well. It's almost as if this is how the phone is actually supposed to be which I find really unusual as it doesn't feel right to me at all. The store assistant also sympathised that he could see what I meant about the scrolling issue too so it definitely isn't just me.

Is it possible that this is a manufacturing defect or is this really how this phone is supposed to be?

Thanks again for the suggestions though Michael!
