Is it possible to change the desktop and documents folder locations to a place outside of the home directory? I don't want to move the home directory, just these two folders.

Where outside of the Home folder do you want to move those two folders? And why do you want to move them?
If it's just for access convenience you could make a Symbolic Link to each of those folder and put the links wherever you'd like.
No you can't. If you were able to that would greatly slow down access to those files and bar you from them when you didn't have internet access.
I wanted to store them in a cloud server like Box. I doubt I can and it’s not vital. Thanks
