Tap-to-click issue on MacOS 12.0.1

So I've been having this very annoying issue in Monterey that happens randomly when I tap to click. Sometimes the occurrence is not registered and the click is 'wasted', like clicking in vain. This is so frustrating and happens so often that I'm really considering going back to BigSur because of it (even though I'm loving Monterey so far, except for this bug). I saw a few people mentioning they're having this issue but not as many people as I thought there would be. I have this happening with my M1 MBA.

Is anybody else experiencing this with their MacBooks or magic trackpads?

As it said in your article - "With Apple yet to acknowledge the issue, it seems highly unlikely the macOS 12 Monterey trackpad issue will be fixed soon. Unfortunately, we were also unable to find any workaround for the issue"

And it's not the only trouble with Monterey, how about Running Out of application memory on mac 14",M1Max,64GB ? I've ran into the same issue on my MBP 13 m1 today and yesterday, although i was using the same amount of applications as before

So, the problem isn't caused by "third party applications" (haha), it's just Monterey, and only one way to resolve all of the issues is downgrading to Big Sur

Aside from x86-only Apps - This computer has x86-only apps might not work on future versions of the operating system.

and Google Chrome which is a known Memory and CPU hog ( reports elsewhere it consumes 10x as much CPU and RAM than native Browser looks good.

Just as suggestion for down the road - x86 Application are still supported and function via Rosette 2 - worth looking forwards to when Apple may cease supporting x86 in future newer versions of macOS. This may become more critical as more and more Apple Computers go only M Chips.

History from another era - the old Motorola PPC once was the main CPU and then Intel was introduced. During that transition the original Rosetta emulator was in place to handle the move. But, at some point around maybe Snow Leopard ( I think ?? ) support for PPC based Apps ceased and only Intel became the accepted. Draw the same parallel between Into and M Chipped CPUs

That is because the Developers of these applications are not keeping up-to-date and / or have zero intent to make their Software totally compatible with / or for the requirements of the M1, M1X and M1 Pro CPUs

There will come a day when there will no choice but either not use there application or find new one which meet to CPU Requirements.

As mentioned earlier - when Apple Switched from Motorola PPC to Intel - there was grace period and then - stopped - period.

I resolved my issue on my M1 MB Air by selecting "Light" in the Trackpad "Point & Click" section.

It was driving me up the wall, I upgraded my work MB Air first, dealt with this issue and then upgraded my home MB Air M1, thinking I'd just deal with it until Apple figured it out.

Turns out it was just the setting in the aforementioned preference.

I have exactly the same issue you describe after upgrading to Monterey. It doesn't feel the same anymore and has caused recent presentations and demonstrations that I have done at work to bomb - makes me look like I don't know what I'm doing with all the waiting after dead clicks. Cursor also jumps around occasionally and highlighting text is not behaving as it used to. A very distinct change after the upgrade. Feels different. The user experience dampened - jolty. (2017 13" MacBook Pro)

Same. Tap to click, which I specifically paid for in practical terms, purchasing the trackpad to pair with my late 2015 iMac. Such a beautiful experience editing both photos and videos with tap to click and some other options in accessibility; especially super useful in Final Cut. But it is super hard to get along with this now.

Cursor jumps around sometimes as well. It's just the tap to click function though. If I disable that the trackpad functions well. Unfortunately, if Apple doesn't fix this, I've really got a problem with them since I paid specifically for the functionality that they've now broken.

With Apple, it is not such a sure thing that they'll quickly fix bugs, but, since trackpads are a major thing due to their superior notebooks, I'd think it gets fixed pretty quick. It better.

I have the same problem with Monterey 12.0.1 and a Magic Trackpad 1 on my

almost brand new iMac mid 2020 27 inch (20.1).

Typing sometimes only works after the 3rd time.

Scrolling is actually problem-free. Just typing instead of clicking creates problems.

And sometimes the Magic Trackpad reacts sluggishly with a delay.

It should be urgently needed with the next update to 12.0.2

to be changed !!

Same issues here. Tap to click fails about 2 or 3% of the time. Even when I turn it off, the cursor seems to "cut out" once in a while, failing to move right away, jumping around, or stopping scrolling. Happens with the built-in trackpad or Magic Trackpad, and it's a new 16" MBP M1 Pro, so I can't downgrade.

I messed with some settings and it seemed to stop happening for a while, but after a few hours it was back to its old ways.

I hope they fix it soon, because as much as it's nice to have a 120Hz screen and a fast processor, they don't matter if the main way of interacting with the device is choppy. It feels like handling macOS with slippery fingers.

I have had this issue as well on a new 14" MB Pro. Since it is a new machine not supported by Big Sur, I don't have the option to roll back to the previous OS which doesn't have the problem.

In my case I find it happens most often when holding a key along with the tap. For example, holding the command key while tapping on a link to open it on a new tab. I often have to tap three times for it to register once. This happens regardless of the application (can be reproduced on different browsers, etc). I've tried changing system preferences, sensitivity settings, etc to no avail. The bug persists and taps fail to register all day every day.

I have used "tap to click" for at least five generations of Mac laptops so I am quite used to it, and expect it to work. At first I thought the MacBook Pro I had just purchased must be defective, but there are multiple threads on several sites reporting the issue and the common denominator is Monterey. Hopefully a fix for this bug can be made ASAP.

Few seconds after booting the fresh Monterey upgrade from BigSur) I found this irritating regression.

I use two macs (Monterey and BigSur) with Barrier (the Open-source KVM software), the server is on Monterey and some clicks are forgotten on the client, if I switch the server on BigSur no click is lost so the problem seems totally in Monterey and not related for example to bluetooth

We must wait for macOS 13 (at the end of 2022) to see this bug fixed or some patch is around the corner?
