apple tv app google tv freezing

I installed Apple TV + today and started watching a tv series. In the last few hours the Apple TV app has completely frozen the Chromecast with Google TV 3 separate times to the point where I have to unplug it. It is very obnoxious. Also many times I get "Video Not Available". Is the app this totally useless for anyone else? This is crazy how buggy this is.

Same issue here. The problem is a memery leak of some kind. If a show does start playing it reaches a point before the video stops (sound continues) and you can't rewind or play anything else on appletv because I get the 'video not available' error. I can sometimes actually navigate within apple tv and exit it back to the Google TV interface, but other apps then struggle to load or play anything, meaning the issue is related to RAM or temporary memory on Google TV being used up by APPLETV and not clearing correctly. Never had an issue with Google TV or Netflix, prime video, Disney etc until I installed APPLETV today.

Basically apple have designed the app badly, perhaps on purpose very sneakily, just like how the app won't work at all unless you accept sharing of data, thus removing any actual user choice, they'd prefer you use their hardwear to have a trouble free experience it seems.

I’m having the same issues. Watching video on Apple TV app on current generation “Chromecast with Google TV” device either results in the device crashing/restarting or “Video Not Available” errors.

to answer your questions:

1) no other app is effected.

2) google software up to date

3) no. I have not reached out to google as this issues is isolated to the Apple TV app. Frankly, the reviews for this app are littered with similar reports. Apple has failed to make an app that is supported by other mfg hardware.

steps I’ve taken…

powered down

restarted chromecast

deleted and reinstalled app (works temporarily)

Apple needs to make an investment and debug this app. Quite an embarrassing and terrible introduction to streaming platform.

Further update: This was clearly a server issue. It's unclear whether the problem was intentional (Apple and Google seem to have had a longstanding love/hate relationship) or what, but I was able to play the content without a hitch on my MacBook Plus, contemporaneous with the problem reproducing on the Chromecast. Today, though, the Chromecast app is streaming flawlessly.

Hi there Bravadomizzou,

We enjoy streaming movies too, and we'd like to help get Apple TV app working smoothly on your Google Chromecast. Let's start with some basics:

  1. You mentioned that it has done this ever since first using the app, which was installed today. Are any other streaming apps having the same issue?
  2. While you may need to contact Google support about how to do this, have you checked for a system update?
  3. Have you reached out to Google support already about this, and if yes, what steps did they have you try?

Take care!

So, I've been successfully watching Apple TV content for months. Binge-watched Foundation without a hitch in early November.

A week ago, I tried watching Greyhound. Around 20 minutes in, it stops and "Video not available". Start it again, and to add insult to injury, it doesn't remember where I was -- starts from 0:00, and I have to fast forward. This happens 2 or 3 more times!

Now, I'm trying to watch Ted Lasso. I'm getting this behavior 2 or 3 times per episode.

I have great internet connectivity: 200 mbit down, 10 mbit up. My TV is not 4K, so content should only be running HD rates. No problems with any other provider/app: Netflix, Hulu, Paramount+, Amazon Prime, YouTube TV? Not the slightest hesitation. This is on a Chromecast with Google TV.

What The Heck, Apple?

I'm going to see whether things get any better if I limit Apple TV content to (ick) SD. And then I'll see whether it happens when I watch on my MacBook Pro...
