No, the Mac is not required to be connected to your Wi-Fi network during backup IF it is making its backup to a local drive directly connected to it.
if the Mac is supposed to be sending its backup to a networked drive or to a drive connected to another Mac, then yes, of course it must be connected by wifi or with an Ethernet cable to the network.
