Shared Apple ID on two Iphones

I created an Apple ID years ago (before family sharing was available) to be shared between two different Iphones (my own and my wife). Both Iphones as backed up in Icloud. After upgrading to IOS 15 we both get text messages belonging to the other phone (both have separate phone numbers). How can I stop this from happening? And is there a way of creating a separate Apple ID to be used for one of us and transferring the existing data from one of the Iphones to this new account, without loosing information?

Merging Apple accounts (IDs) or transferring data is not officially supported, nor can it be done easily or completely.

Look into using Family Sharing to continue to be able to use items purchased with one Apple ID with other Apple IDs.

Family Sharing - https://support.apple.com/HT201060

Set up Family Sharing - https://support.apple.com/HT201088

Fortunately when you sign out of one ID and sign in with a different one it asks you in most cases if you wish to retain the data from it on your device. Say yes and then delete individual items you do not want.
