Is your hard drive almost full?

It should never have more than 75% for efficient performance.

Go to the Apple menu at the top left corner of the screen, select "About This Mac" and click on the "Storage" tab to see how much free space you have.

If that is OK try restarting your iMac to clear away some of the accumulated garbage and refresh the memory.

Have you got the Chrome browser or CleanMyMac installed as they have been implicated in performance problems with Final Cut Pro and iMovie?

Download the free version of Etrecheck. Run it and post the results on here.

It is perfectly safe and will not show any private information. Give it full drive access.

Is the iMovie Library particularly large?

Have you got loads of 4K footage?

Earlier this year my 2017 iMac suddenly started beach balling when I tried to play clips in the Final Cut Pro timeline.

It turned out there was one corrupt clip in the project which I deleted and reimported.

Everything was fine after that but finding a corrupt clip involves a bit of detective work.

Try a new project with new clips.
