Compressor error: System Error = -9074 {Unknown Error: -9074}

After updating to Monterey last week, one of our iMac Pros gives us this error when sending a job from Final Cut to Compressor:

We have trashed the Compressor prefs in Library/App Support, reinstalled Compressor and even reinstalled the OS, still same issue. We also granted full disk access to Compressor in System Prefs/Security, still same issue. Any help appreciated.

Anything to narrow down the replication scenario will help. I have tried many times to reproduce this on Monterey 12.1, FCP 10.6.1 and Compressor 4.6 but cannot. I used many, many titles, many built-in Fx inc'l stabilization, retiming, optical flow, mixed frame rates, rate conforming, multiple projects in a Compressor batch, etc. It just would not happen, at least on Apple Silicon. My x86 machines are running Big Sur, so I haven't tested that due to the apparent tie to Monterey. See attached.

Has anyone reported this on Apple Silicon? That would be interesting because FCP plugin requirements are more stringent for that. Has anyone reproduced this with no 3rd-party plugins installed?

If anyone can make this happen on a single project, can they duplicate that, then start deleting parts of it to arrive at the simplest possible scenario? We need to know if any 3rd-party plugins are involved. If it quits after deleting certain clips, titles or Fx, what were those? Does it the problem resume if those are restored? It is sensitive to Compressor export preset?

If anyone can reproduce it, can they monitor memory consumption up to the problem point? You can try Activity Monitor or if you have iStat Menus try that (see below).

I tried a few steps and it exported properly, I suspect it has something to do with the naming of the relevant material files, no special symbols in the naming.

Steps.

1, all the files containing symbols are changed to letters (the track has been used without him)

2, copy the project out (this is one of the steps I tried)

3, then rename the project to letters

4. After sending to Compressor, change the export naming to pure letters as well

After that I exported normally, I hope this helps you.

I also found an operation to try:.

1. Send to Compressor and start rendering

2. At this point, notice if there are two unfinished files with the same name in the export directory, if so, delete them and restore them after a few seconds (CMD Z)

3, most likely your file will be rendered normally

Remark.

If you can't see the two generated files in the export directory, try changing the project name in final cut and try again, including changing the name before rendering in Compressor.

I too am having the same issue with my 2013 MacPro and Compressor failing with the 9074 System Error on one of my films I'm trying to export from FCP to the current version 4.6 of Compressor. Once the file is in Compressor and I select to export an Apple ProRes 4444 XQ file Compressor fails with in 2-4 minutes in the the process.

I've removed the Library for the film that fails, and loaded 7 other Library's which all worked fine. So my problem is with just one film failing to complete.

I'd appreciate anyone who's got specific suggestions on how to resolve this as the Apple Support page with multiple options seems dated.

Hi Tom, thanks for the suggestion.

I've just attempted the Share/Export File option in FCP (avoiding Compressor) and selected to export as a ProRes 4444 XQ. Unfortunately I'm getting a message that the film has 'background tasks that are not yet complete'. Yet all Background Tasks are idle for the film in question.

I've obviously got an issue with this particular film and wonder what the best way to rebuild it, or discover what aspect may be having a problem. Open to suggestions.

All my other film exports have worked perfectly, only this one is the issue.

Thanks, Wayne

Well, unfortunately Tom, that didn't work. I created a new Project in the same Library, copied the entire timeline from the original, and pasted it into the new project (it's about 55 minutes in length) and then tried the export.

Result is the same message, 'background tasks that are not complete. if you continue, these effects may be missing or have reduced quality: Stabilization'

Thoughts?

Interestingly enough, I'm also getting a 'Video Frames were dropped during playback' message when just running the timeline to see if it faults. Never had this happen before when I created these films years ago. I'm not using proxy's, and created the content in 1080p from the start.

Very frustrating as the other films I've done worked fine.

Tom, your suggestion to make more space on the 9tb drive was apparently the issue. The drive was close to maxed out and hasn't been used for editing as a result.

I removed about 600mbs gaining nearly a TB of space, rebooted all drives and system, reloaded the newly created Project and exported to a new 42tb drive... file created successfully! Whew! The other films exported in 4444 were smaller in size so the limited space didn't effect them.

Should you care to see the films... check out HDSereneScapes.com

Thanks so much for your help, advice and assistance. I'm now good to go.

I am facing the same situation and I have already reported it to Apple. I hope they will fix it soon.

For now I use Compressor presets in Final Cut Pro and that works. But I need to change settings often, so fixing Compressor would be nice.

Anybody facing this problem please send feedback to Apple (from the Compressor menu), so they know this is happening to more people.
