After the Monterey update my external USB SSD mounts very very very slow. At first I thought it would not mount at all but when waiting long enough it did mount. Once mounted it works but would be great if Apple could fix this bug.

There have been reports of issues with some (not all) usb cables and usb hubs so it is worth trying out different one. As Apple are aware of this it may get fixed in a later update.
I’m using a usb hub and a separate video adapter with usb, both have external drives (one is TM) attached, both work fine with Monterey.

It is not my boot drive but a data drive I use to for extra storage and also timemachine backups.
I made a BigSur VM and I connected my SSD time machine backup and I can see all of my backup folders just fine!?
Not even using a hub, it is a Samsung USB SSD directly connected.
Have the same issue with mounting external SSD via USB3/Firewire. Eventually it does so but takes minutes before loading.
