"Tap to Click" is not consistent - MacBook Pro M1

The "Tap to Click" option on my MacBook Pro M1 13" is not always consistent, meaning it doesn't always work when I tap the trackpad. I would say it works about 75% of the time. Often I would have to tap it twice, or 3 times for something to register. And no, it's not because I'm tapping too lightly. Never had this issue with my old 2016 Pro. Anyone else experience this? Is there a fix for it?

Hey there Zombify,

Thanks for contacting the Apple Support Communities today! We understand you're having issues with your trackpad not recognizing a click when tapping it, and we'd be happy to provide you with the best steps.

To get started, while we understand you stated that you're not tapping too lightly, if you adjust the Click option in the Trackpad System Preferences to a lighter setting, does the same issue persist?

For steps on how to change your Trackpad preferences on your MacBook, check out this link here: Change Trackpad preferences on Mac - Apple Support

Keep us updated with the results.

Take care.

Zombify,

Thanks for taking a look at that resource, and giving that a try.

Going forward, has this always been an issue, or did this issue occur recently? If recently, did you by chance make any changes to your device before noticing that the taps weren't registering as clicks?

Does restarting your MacBook seem to help with the issue, even if it's just temporary? Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support

If not, we'd also like to rule out any issues that may be caused by software that loads as your Mac starts up. This can be done by testing the trackpad in safe mode. For steps on how to boot into safe mode, and what to do if the issue does or doesn't occur while in safe mode, check out this link here: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

We look forward to hearing back from you with more results.

Have a great day!

Zombify,

Got it, thanks!

From here, and based on the information you've provided, we would recommend reaching out to Apple Support directly at this link here: Get Support - Apple Support

From that link choose Mac > Mac notebooks > Hardware issues > Keyboard, mouse, or trackpad issues. From there you should see a few options to reach out, depending on your location.

Best regards.

I'm also on Monterey. It's definitely a software related issue. I saw a whole thread the other day with people experiencing the same problem, regardless of which Macbook they were using, 2017, 2021, 2020, etc. (see link below) It's extremely annoying, and I am also noticing that often when I tap, the cursor jumps to another part of the screen. I really hope they fix this soon. I know I can disable tap to click, but it's something that I've been so used to over the years.

Hi there. Thanks for the reply. I'm not referring to the haptic click, which is what the light-med-firm settings are referring to. I don't think they have any impact to the "tap to click" feature. Regardless, whether it's light or firm, the situation is the same. It's just very frustrating, since it was so solid on my 2016 MacBook Pro.
