If the AirPods have been previously paired to your iPhone the phone may recognise and connect the AirPods without going through the pairing process. That would be a good clue.
Be aware that being left unused for 3 months might have deep discharged the batteries in the pods and/or charging case,and they may not hold a good charge or might fail to charge at all. If this happens contact Apple Support for more advice and repair.
