Migration Assistant Keeps Disconnecting

I'm trying to setup my new MacBook Pro and Migration Assistant is giving me a lot of headaches. First I tried to restore from a Time Machine backup and it was going very slowly. So I decided to speed things up and do a direct transfer over thunderbolt between my old laptop to my new one. Here's the details:

  • Old MacBook Pro - 2017 15" MBP Running Monterey
  • New 14" MacBook Pro (M1 Max)
  • M1 Max laptop is connected to power via Magsafe adapter
  • 2017 MBP is connected to M1Max via Thunderbolt 4 cable (which is also supplying power)

Overall everything goes fine to start. Transfer gets going and looks to be running fast. Then at some point the laptops disconnect from each other. Nothing's being moved and it's a relatively new cable that I use all the time.

Hello sterno_inferno,

Thanks for reaching out through the Apple Support Communities about that difficulty with transferring your data over to your new MacBook Pro.

Have you had the opportunity to try that process using another cable?

If you try using Migration Assistant via Wi-Fi as opposed to a cable, do you still experience the same behavior? Move your content to a new Mac

Hopefully those details will help to further isolate this behavior.

Take care.
