Can't select more than one word in Safari's PDF viewer

I struggle with an issue with Safari's PDF viewer. After searching for a word/phrase in Safari PDF viewer (cmd+f), I am sometimes unable to select text. The selection seems to be locked on only one word—e.g., clicking anywhere else in the PDF will only select one word, not more text (see attached image). The problem comes and goes.

The problem does not appear if I open a file in Preview. Please advise on a fix—it is tiresome to open each PDF in Preview if the only thing I want to do is copy a sentence from multiple PDFS. I currently cannot do it with Safari's PDF plugin.

Hello Mr_Mario,

Try starting up the system in what is called safe mode and testing. This will help isolate this issue.

To start in safe mode, begin with the computer powered off. Follow the directions found here, depending on what type of Mac you have: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

The computer will take longer to start in safe mode, and the screen may have some distorted video as it starts up. This is normal. Once you are logged in, use the system and test to see if the issue continues.

If everything seems to work as expected, go ahead and restart the computer normally and test again. Starting in safe mode forces the computer to run some disk checks similar to First Aid. This can resolve some issues.

Cheers.

Hello Mr_Mario,

The next step to try to isolate the issue would be to set up a new user account and see if the issue continues. Instructions on how to do this can be found here: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support

Make sure the account is an Administrator account. If the issue does not occur, then there is something in the original account causing the issue.

If the issue continues in the new account, then we would recommend you Contact - Official Apple Support

They will be in the best position to assist further.

Hello Mr_Mario,

From your post it appears you are having some issues with the way Find works in Safari with PDF files.

Do you have the same issue if you exit Find mode before trying to select other words? When Find is used, and a word is found, Safari is waiting for the next action to involve that selected word, unless Find mode is exited.

If this is not the issue, provide additional details and others here may be able to provide a solution.

Have a good day.
