My iPhone will not allow me to turn on mail

My iPhone keeps telling me I need an iCloud email and then lets me try to create one but keeps telling me that there is a problem with setting up an email address. My Apple ID is a Gmail account but I recently purchased this iPhone and am having nothing but problems setting it up.

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14
