Monterey 12.0.1. Second Monitor Issue

I just updated to Monterey 12.0.1. I have an iMac Retina 5k, 27-inch 2020 w/3.6Ghz 10 Core Intel Core i9; and have lost second display functionality. Both screens flicker on an off repeatedly when second monitor is connected to Thuderbolt port.

I got it to work!

I tried in Safe Mode and my external monitor worked fine. Restarted in normal mode - still same issue and I noticed my machine wouldn't SLEEP.

I found this article (https://michaelkummer.com/tech/mac-sleep-fix/) which suggested to reset the NVRAM and System Management Controller (SMC) by shutting down the Mac and turning it back on while holding the opt + command + R + P keys.

I did this with all external USB-C (except power) disconnected, logged in and plugged in my monitor.

Don't know how long it will last, but it's working now.

I am having similar issues after upgrading a MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) from 12.1 to 12.2. I even bought a new Apple branded USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 cable... after trying all the other tips on this question. When the new cable didn't work I even backed up the laptop and reinstalled the OS - even that didn't help.

I am not ready to believe that the display died right as I upgraded; are there any diagnostics I can run?

Adding to all the voices with the same problem.

I'm on a Macbook Air M1 and just recently updated to Monterey 12.2. Now when I connect to an external monitor (LG 27UK850) via USB-C, my computer freezes (on both screens — I can still move the cursor) every few minutes and not receiving any inputs, sometimes for a few seconds other times for 15 seconds or more. When came to, it will do all of my inputs all at once. All I can do when this happens is until it goes away. It seems to get better if I disconnect and reconnect but this solution gives inconsistent results.

Also, this occurs more frequently especially when I'm using mirror display mode.

I have a 2017 MacBook Pro 13 inch and since the upgrade to Monterey my dual monitors stopped working. I only get 1 monitor that is plugged into my CalDigit TS3 display port. The other monitor that utilizes USBC is not working. It only works if the Mac is not plugged into the docking station... Please fix this issue as it is causes major productivity issues.

The plot thickens... I dusted off an old Late 2016 15" MacBook Pro, the first-gen-touch bar model. Installed a fresh copy of Mojave. Same cable, same monitor, no problems.

Upgraded that machine to Monterey 12.2, same cable, same monitor, no problems.

Use the LG app to factory reset it - no problems.

Pull the cable out and plug it into my 16" 2010 M1 Pro MacBook Pro- black screen.

Plug the cable back into the 2016 MacBook Pro - no problems.

I don't suppose anyone from Apple is monitoring this conversation, it would be really nice to hear from you!

I'm in exactly the same place with 12.2.1 as I was with 12.2:

MacBook Pros:

2021 16" M1Pro

(Late) 2016 15"

Displays:

LG UltraFine 5K 27MD5KA-B "X"

LG UltraFine 5K 27MD5KA-B "Y"

(in different locations)

2021 w/ "X": works fine

2016 w/ "X": works fine

2021 w/ "Y": black screen, display not detected, but powers the laptop

2016 w/ "Y": works fine

This is so frustrating. The 2016 laptop's battery is all but shot, so using for anything more than these types of troubleshooting isn't realistic. And I spend roughly half of my work hours at location "X" and half at "Y".

Given that both "X" and "Y" work fine w/ 2016, and 2021 works w/ "X" but not "Y" (new Apple USBC/TB3 cables all around), I still have to believe that there is some firmware or software problem at work here with my new laptop... perhaps something stupid like "The M1 software driver/software stack can't handle different instances of the same hardware model display"?

Is this response really from Apple? This is the best you got? This response is not only useless it is written as if we are third graders...Replug your device?? Really? Just admit your update is bad and promise us a date when you are going to promptly fix your mistake which is creating a big problem for your best apple market , people in the creative field that need two + displays!

I've had this same issue since an Apple computer tech fixed my 6 month old iMac under warranty and decided to upgrade to Monterey for me. As soon as I tried to connect my second monitor - nothing. I read all the responses here, tried everything, tried an older monitor from work as well. Logged a support ticket through Apple and no luck at all - was just told to restore to Big Sur which I didn't want to do because that would take another 24 hours to restore all my data.

I took a gamble and ordered a USB Display Adaptor from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B09B9Q4637/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Plugged my HDMI cable into the adaptor and IT WORKS!!! I downloaded the driver as recommended by the product and no issues at all. No flickering, nothing. I'm now back up and running! I cannot believe that this fixed it! The adaptor was ~$80 but so worth it! I feel complete again :) I hope this helps someone else having the same issues. I've got a 2021 iMac and have a 12 month old Lenovo monitor connected.

Still having the same problem on my MacBook Air 2017.

I checked the cable with the same model of a friend of mine but on Big Sur, cable is working without any problem. I tried it again today after the update to 12.2.1, still nothing on the second screen.

As I am a DJ and use my second screen to have more screen surface, it makes it 10x slower to do it on a small 13" screen. Even tried to test it on several TV's in the house, but they all gave the same effect.

Does someone finally have a solution to fix it or is Apple just ignoring this issue?

My LG 5k monitor couldn't reply the M1 Pro screen since the last update of Monterrey. While the Macbook pro M1 was installing the screen monitor turned off and until now my monitor works. I ’ve taken it to technical service and the diagnosis is burned power supply board.

Apple isn't transparent, nor have they tried to solve anything and is hidden solutions.

I had this same issue upgrading from Catalina to Monterey 12.2.1 on my 2020 27" iMac and a 2nd BenQ monitor using usbc to display port cable. After following Apple's suggestions with no luck, I downloaded BenQ's DisplayPilot. Still no luck. Restarted several times and unplugged the cable several times. No luck. And then on one last unplug/plug the second monitor miraculously came to life! I don't know which of my actions fixed the problem - but it now works. I hate upgrading the MacOS - always issues but I had to to support a new thunderbolt hub. Hopefully installing the hub will go smoother.

I had the same issue. I just upgraded to monterey 2 days ago and here's how I fixed it.

What I was using:

2 vga to displayport cables with displayport to usbc adapters on the end, and 1 vga to hdmi.

The 2 displayport ones went directly into the mac and the hdmi goes into the usb hub thing (which provides power and everything too).

What works:

2 vga to hdmi cables plugged into separate hdmi to usbc adapters similar to the apple one. The one plugged into the apple adapter stayed the same.

(Very similar to these is what I have now https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S8MKJ6Q/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_dl_68Q38D22TS2Q84WKJN7A?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 )

My best guess is that the displayport to usbc wasn't "liked" by the system due to them removing certain usb drivers.

So about $80 I was able to get everything working again. On the plus side I have a billion usb ports now.

I created this account specifically so I could share and that hopefully other people can learn from my experience.
