Monterey 12.0.1. Second Monitor Issue

I just updated to Monterey 12.0.1. I have an iMac Retina 5k, 27-inch 2020 w/3.6Ghz 10 Core Intel Core i9; and have lost second display functionality. Both screens flicker on an off repeatedly when second monitor is connected to Thuderbolt port.

I got it to work!

I tried in Safe Mode and my external monitor worked fine. Restarted in normal mode - still same issue and I noticed my machine wouldn't SLEEP.

I found this article (https://michaelkummer.com/tech/mac-sleep-fix/) which suggested to reset the NVRAM and System Management Controller (SMC) by shutting down the Mac and turning it back on while holding the opt + command + R + P keys.

I did this with all external USB-C (except power) disconnected, logged in and plugged in my monitor.

Don't know how long it will last, but it's working now.

I have also been struggling with this issue for more than 1 month!

I have a Xiaomi Mi 34 monitor at home which used to work great before upgrading to macOS Monterey. Now with the 12.1 version the screen connects, I'm able to adjust the settings from the mac display setting, BUT the display is still black...

I have changed the display rate, adjusted resolution, tried a bunch of things like restarted mac completely (with and without the display connected), but still no difference.

This is quite frustrating to be honest and it pretty bad that Apple haven't released any explanation on this issue.

At work, I have a Samsung widescreen and that works perfectly without any issues. I even use the same cable, both at home and work. It's just the monitor at home that causes this issue.

The cable I'm using is a USB-C to Displayport, which supports Ultra HD 4K resolution. And like said earlier, this worked without any issues before upgrading to macOS Monterey!

My monitors showed well under Monetary 12.01, one connected to an HDMI cable and another one to a USB-C. Unfortunately, the HDMI connection failed when I upgrade to Monterey 12.1. I did check all the cables and was very sure that the HDMI signal from my 2018 MacMini was no longer to act. Is there anyone who encounter the same problem?

I am on a m1 Mac mini with Monterey 12.1 and I have two monitors connected, an older apple Cinema display via an apple adapter to the HDMI port and an older Samsung monitor through an apple usb-c to vga adaptor to an usb-c port.

The Cinema Display works fine and while the Samsung shows the same but empty desktop I am not able to access the screen via mouse.

When I unplug the Cinema Display from the HDMI port the desktop on the Samsung on the usb-c port becomes accessible

and all my open windows etc show up.

I tried alternating between the two usb-c ports but no luck.

Thank you.

Change your monitor's color profile setting

I have the same issue on Macbook Pro 2019 using an LG 27UN850-W Display, connecting with USB-C provided in the box. After updating to 12.1, I began experiencing display issues that I thought were related to the update. Anytime I would connect my monitor and try to scale the resolution to 4k, the monitor would shut off, the Macbook Pro 2019 would crash and leave me at login. And of course logging in just cycled everything again-- crash, shut-off monitor, display login...

After many trials, chats with Apple support, etc, I pretty much just gave up and started trying everything. AND FOR ME changing the color profile fixed the issue. I had loaded a custom color profile to try to match the color the closest possible to the Mac's display. Changing it to just the standard LG HDR 4K profile that came when I set up the display fixed all my issues.

So I had the same issue, I had just received the new Macbook Pro with an M1 chip. It worked fine on my monitor then I had to do a routine restart of the computer, when the computer turned back on it would no longer display on my external monitor (DELL). It was connected via USB-C which was also its charge source. I could get it to work using HDMI to HDMI but it wasn't great, I then managed to get it working HDMI to HDMI to my tv and that worked fine (obviously not ideal compared to my monitor). I then took the laptop to work and tried it on my work monitor (SAMSUNG) which had the same USB-C pass-through cable and no luck, again HDMI worked fine with this monitor.

I then tried switching from the USB-C cable that came with the monitor to a thunderbolt cable that my IT department supplied me with, and this WORKED! Since then it is still charging and displaying on my monitor through that one cable (Thunderbolt). I am yet to try on my monitor at home but I feel it will rectify it there too.

Really hope this will help some people as I know how frustrating this issue is!

Oh boy, so after a few hours of trying all the tricks here and in other places on the good ole' internet I was about to give up. Same issue as many of you, second monitor running through a Dell Hub, is that what it's called? Like a docking station but nothing docks in it. Anyway...y'all get me I am sure, nerds. Monitor won't stop flickering black along with my Macbook Pro, totally unusable. So I'm ready to give up but then the genius in me pops up and says "hey d-head, try popping the lightning/thunderbolt/usb-C thing through an adapter to regular USB then back to lightning/thunderbolt/usb-C thing. Yup. That worked. My 2nd monitor now looks like a hillbilly set it up but at least it is working through the Dell hub whatchamacallit thing. Steve Jobs is literally going to come back as a zombie and take a flame thrower to all the people ruining Apple. Horrible, just horrible. Although, this is sort of on me for upgrading. Every-time I upgrade Apple SW I trade one problem for 10, SMH, anyway, hope this helps somebody. peace out.

Honestly it just needs to be said - WTF is Apple doing? They spent 3 months on fine tuning Monterey, and this issue STILL doesn't get addressed? This is the final nail for me unfortunately. I know for a fact this issue was widely reported across multiple users. I personally escalated it to their Sr. Devs who assured me it would get resolved on the next update. The fact that they put out another **** update really calls to question the direction is headed in as a company. They aren't listening to their users. Shame on the entire Apple organization honestly. I hope they see this.

First time poster and real neophyte when it comes to this stuff. I lost my second monitor when I upgraded to Monterey as happened to many others. Tried many of the simpler solutions others suggested over the last couple of months with no success. Upgraded to Monterey 12.2 this morning, shut down the laptop and restarted, and out of nowhere the second monitor showed up. I have found that when the computer "sleeps" (maybe the wrong term - I'm talking about when the screen goes dark after not being used for several minutes), the problem returns, but usually can be fixed by restarting again (with the second monitor powered on and already connected). It's a bit frustrating, but at least I have a second monitor once I restart.

None of the proposed solutions have worked on my system. My monitor has HDMI ports only, so the USB solution isn't possible, but I did try bypassing the computer's built-in HDMI port, which made no difference. And no change with OS 12.1 or 12.2. I'm right where I was when I got this 2021 M1 Macbook Pro in December: The monitor detects the computer, but the computer doesn't detect the monitor.
