ipod Nano 3rd Gen recognised by windows but not itunes

I purchased a second hand iPod Nano 3rd Gen. It works fine. However I'm stuck with the previous owner's library of songs.

When connected to my (up to date) Windows PC I can see the iPod Nano but in iTunes I do not see it.

I've tried toggling the hold switch and holding menu and centre button - no joy.

Any suggestions please?

Windows, Windows 10

Hi Leakage-guru,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand iTunes is not recognizing your iPod nano, and we'd like to assist. Do you have the latest version of iTunes?

I found an iTunes / Plug-Ins folder in my Program Files (x86) - there was only one file in there (itw_scrobbler.dll), I hard deleted it.

I then connected my old iPod that hadn't been recognised in iTunes for months.

iTunes recognised it and told me the iPod updating software needed to be installed.

Then 3-5 times I restored the iPod (Classic 160GM) and now it's working as normal.

Hi Eric

I have the latest version of iTunes. I have also uninstalled it and reinstalled it twice.

My iPod is recognised in Windows, but does not show in iTunes.

The iPod is unlocked.

I do not see a Trust this Computer alert.

I have tried all the steps I can from the support pages.

The issues I cannot resolve are:

  1. I cannot shutdown iTunes without it restarting automatically...
  2. iPod support service is not installed
  3. No iPod, iPhone or iPad found

For your information my iPod Classic was the device I used for years (until it stopped being recognised - it only starts in basic mode now). The serial number of the Nano I am trying to connect (which works fine independently of iTunes) is 7K740011YXX.

Many thanks
