Stop inline view attachments in mail
How do I compose an email in mail with an image as attachment (instead of inline image) in Monterey?
Typing "defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool yes" in Terminal has no effect.

If you attach an image, whether it appears to the recipient as an inline image or an attachment depends entirely on how their preferences are set: you can't control this. If you want to avoid the image showing, zip it. Then it will appear as an attachment.

Ok, I see I can use "view as icon". It would be great if that could be set as the default.
I know, but I also don't want those images in my compose window... This can be solved by first compressing the images, which has the downside that the recipient has to unzip.

As Roger stated…

That the recipient can view the image in a normal way as an attachment is a relief.
First zipping the image so that my compose window is not littered with images is a good workaround, thanks!

+1 on compressing the image.
