How do I open stored photos and data on the external drive when the icon says I don't have permission??? It's my computer, my drive, my files.

Permission to access new folder I have created a folder on my desktop into which I am trying to transfer a year's worth of Photos( I want to do the same for a number of years to archive them on an external HD to save space). Howeve, while the majority have exported just fine, I am getting the same message for some the photos which says I don't have permission to access the folder I have just created - why might this be?

Sick of Mac denying access to my own files! Every time I transfer photos etc. from my LG6 phone to my iMac (Sierra), I cannot open the photos, as the Mac denies me permission to the file. Never mind that I am on an admin account and its my machine! So then I have to putz around trying to tag the right permissions for all of these files all the time, and let me say, even that doesn't always work, and I'm locked out of my own files! I WANT THIS TO STOP. I want access to my own files when I transfer them from the phone or a USB key and I want the Mac to stop blocking me from accessing my own files. To be clear, I am looking for a *permanent* fix for this. I already know how to change permissions temporarily. It's actually my wife's iMac, and she's totally fed up with this, and wants to either change phones or switch to Windows. Do I have to switch to Windows to avoid these problems?

Can't change permissions Hi! I'm trying to move some of my pictures to an external hard drive to free up some space and am running into issues. When I try to move a photo to the hard drive I get the grey circle with the line through it. I verified I logged in as my admin user. When I try to go into the Sharing & Permissions section for my hard drive it says "You can only read" I have clicked the lock and put in my password and tried to change the permission so everyone can read & write but it keeps telling me "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have the necessary permission." Any ideas?

What format is the drive? It needs to be APFS or MacOS extended Journaled, with the ignore ownership bit set.
