setup new MacBook from old crashed one
my old laptop crashed last week and I would like to recover the data from it and put it on my new laptop.

So we would need to know more about your old laptop. What was it, what OS. Also, are you able to remove the SSD/HDD and put that into an external drive enclosure to then, hook up to your new MacBook? Also, realize the SSD/HDD format of your old laptop maynot be compatible with your Mac's, if it is say NTFS (it can be read; but you will not necessarily be able to keep permissions, et al.).
So, once you let us know more, we can try to help further.
