Generally speaking, I read where apple maps consume heavy data. Overall, online or off which map would you use both locally and distance.

I have not noticed heavy data usage by Apple Maps or Google Maps.
Generally once you ask for directions the maps and directions are downloaded and then you only use data for traffic updates.
