Duplicate messages app in notification center

Hello dear all, hope someone here can help me.

I recently installed Monterey (clean install even) on my MacBook and since first start up it has several issues that are really annoying. For instance in system settings - notification center I have two versions of the messages app showing. One with the new icon and one with the old icon. I switched every option of the old version off but it keeps turning them all back on. I can't delete it, can't switch it off... Once after start up it was gone but came back a day later.

Searched the web and found only old asks and replies to "press delete" wich does nothing

Please, tell me how to get it gone for good. Thank you!

Hey luxperpetua,

As mentioned previously, let's stick to the issue for which the post was made. For your other issues, you'll want to either make a new post, or reach out to Apple Support.

While you still may need to reach out to Apple Support regarding the issue you're having with Messages preferences, we do recommend two more steps to try:

  1. What occurred when you tested in a new user?
  2. Does the same issue occur in safe mode? This link shows how to Start up your Mac in safe mode.

Cheers!

Hello luxperpetua,

While we can finish troubleshooting the issue for which this post was created, we recommend either making a new post for each of your other issues, or contacting Apple Support here: Get Support

You may also need to contact Apple Support for the issue with Messages preferences, but ;et's finish troubleshooting what we can first:

  1. You mentioned this started to show in Messages preferences after installing macOS Monterey, but have you tried a restart since then? If not, check out the section 'Restart' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac
  2. Which version number shows for macOS Monterey? As there are beta versions, along with official releases, the one needed for further troubleshooting would be the official release macOS Monterey 12.0.1. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’.
  3. Once you check/try the above steps, and if the issue remains, we recommend testing for this in a new test user. Check out the steps under 'Add a user' here: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Have a good one!

Hello,

This has happened to me as well. Chatted with apple support x 2, and no fixes.

I purchased a MacBook Pro 2021 14" with the latest version of Monterey. I migrated my documents/settings etc. from my MacBook Pro 13" running Catalina (at which time everything was working normally).

I noticed that I also have 2 "messages" icons under "notifications & focus."

I set up a test user, and this is not a problem for the test user, just my account. Apple support thought that this was probably carried over after the migration from my old computer, and that with an update Monterey when it comes along it will "probably get fixed."

I turned one of the "messages" icons off for notifications, but every time I re-start my computer, the glitch re-sets. This is rather annoying.

Any help would be welcomed!

Hi luxperpetua,

We certainly want to help with this, as we agree, it's unexpected behavior for your Mac. Let's start with better understanding what's happening:

  1. While troubleshooting occurs in English here, we wanted to ask what does both words selected in your screenshot translate to in English?
  2. When did you first notice this occurring?
  3. Besides the issue you mentioned, are there any other issues occurring when receiving Messages notifications?

Take care!

Hello bruno75,

thank you for your reply. So, to your questions:

  1. Sorry, for not translation it, I assumed people would be able to tell from the icons. "Nachrichten" is german for Messages, and below it says it's "aus" meaning it's turned off. It is System settings > Notification & Focus > Messages. At least I guess that's what it would be called in english - I don't dare change the language in fear more bugs would accumulate (but they do anyway). Highlighted is the old Messages app that should not be there. I know the icon from using Mojave before.
  2. I noticed it first thing after the clean install of Monterey as I looked at the system settings to set everything the way I like. I did not even use another OS with that volume before.
  3. No, I don't think there are more issues with notifications. But there are a lot more issues with Monterey.

So, maybe a bit more information:

I wiped my Mac because I wanted to re-organize all my stuff and start fresh. The new OS seemed like a good time to do it, so I clean installed it and did not restore a backup. I saw the duplicate Messages app in the notification settings, but did not find anything on it online that was not many years old and no longer working.

Another thing acting up was my launchpad, that shuffled all my apps after every restart. I found something online to delete the dock and launchpad db and it has been fine since then.

I later added another AFPS volume for Mojave because I need some apps for work that do not work on an OS beyond Catalina. I know those volumes interact and I can see duplicates for every app when I right click i.e. on a PDF and "open with" it shows me the new and old versions of every app like TextEdit etc. I know this is as it should be. What it shouldn't do is show duplicates of apps in notification settings. And I don't get why it does not show me duplicates of Safari and Calendar etc. (despite the fact that there are technically two versions of every app on my Mac) but of Messages only.

The old Messages does not seem to work anyway meaning I don't get double notifications. However, EVERY TIME after restart the slider "allow notifications" is back "on" and all the boxes are ticked like the 1st one "allow notifications on lock screen" (something I would never want).

The Message app itself is not working ideally: it does not load my older conversations from icloud, all I see are the recent ones. The button to "start sync" is not where it used to be with Mojave (I don't know if it should be there now). On the volume running Mojave I just clicked "sync" and all my older conversations appeared.

And also since I started this thread yesterday, my icloud profile pictures and name disappeared from the first page ("general") of the settings of Messages.

Something I noticed is also that apple added an option for Messages to the settings of iCloud Drive (system settings > Apple ID > iCloud Drive > "options...") that is not there in Mojave. Making it more similar to the settings on the iphone. These are syncing fine with my other Volume and my 2013 iMac both running Mojave. The volume with Monterey that is now more similar then ever to my iphone with the lates iOs is somehow not running as fine.

Having written all this it feels like it is now too much issues to bother and it would be easier to just clean install again, do it all again. Which is a bother and a disappointment since I never had this kind of trouble before. Thank you reading this novel. However, I don't have much hope this could be fixed.

Hello again! :)

I did a couple of things over the weekend and here is the current situation. The issue persists and there are new ones, too. First your questions:

  1. Yes, several times.
  2. 12.0.1 - I did all updates first, before changing settings or anything. But I don't know if i was an older version when I first noticed the duplicate, I did not check then.
  3. Did not try that, yet. Will check that later.

So, now the things I did recently.

After the Messages app would not sync my old conversations and lacked the "start sync" button, I decided it would be better to just start over. I created a new volume and clean installed Monterey. And everything was fine at first. The Messages app had a sync button and I synced all my older messages. There was no duplicate symbol in notification settings. I checked anyway and one day it was back. It might have been after I logged in on my 2013 iMac running Mojave (I did not start the Mojave volume that is on the same Mac with Monterey since re-installing). So now it's as before: I untick all the boxes on the Messages notification settings with the old icon and set it to "off". Every day they are all ticked again and set to "on". The settings are not the same as on my Mojave iMac (I never tick "show notifications on lock screen"). I wonder what causes all this.

Other bugs or issues:

  • Launchpad used to shuffle my app icons after every restart but I was able to fix that.
  • As of today, my Mac now deletes my Touch ID. I did not notice it on start up, but when my Mac went to auto sleep mode, it asked for my password to log in. I wondered about that because I had set it to use touch ID for logging back in after waking it up from sleep mode. I used it several times only yesterday. But, today it forgot my touch ID and unticked all the boxes in settings. I saved a new fingerprint and ticked the boxes I need. Later, I shut the mac off and restarted again. It was okay and I worked for a couple of hours. It did not go into sleep mode during this time. But when I did something where I usually only need touch ID, it asked for my password. I checked the settings and my touch ID was gone again. So annoying. Before, I had kind of given up and decided to live with the duplicate messages icon. But forgetting my touch ID like that is new level, I'm baffled.

What can I do? I'm open to suggestions. I hope someone know's how to help.
