I have 2t on icloud and I want to back up my photos only to icloud but not take space on my iPad. But I think if I delete photos from my ipad, they will disappear from my other devices. So i guess what i need to know is how to have photos store to icloud and my iMac/iphone but not my iPad.. I image some setting in my ipad could accomplish this??

So in my ipad settings/icloud if I turn off icloud photos, will any new photos taken with the iPhone of imported into photos on my iMac, not longer appear in my iPad. If so this would allow my photos to sync from my iPhone or iMac to icloud and no longer appear in the ipad?

Not if you turn off the features. If you leave them on (iCloud photos, messages in iCloud), then the items will be deleted. That's the trade off, if you turn off iCloud photos, the photos will not longer sync to your iPad but you can delete them from the device without being synced through iCloud.
