Trouble backing up new computer

If you have to reformat a hard drive every time you want to back up your computer, what is the point of having an external drive? My external drive has two previous computers backed up in it but needs to be reformatted before I can backup the new computer.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.6

You should not have to reformat your Time Machine backup every time you wish to backup. You should either add multiple volumes to backup each Mac, or the better solution, buy external backup drives for each Mac you need to backup.
